Developed by ‘Parks and Recreation’ creator, ‘The Good Place’ is a comedy-drama with layers of philosophy, theology, and fantasy. While the series becomes more complex and encompasses more ideas as it progresses, it essentially focuses on a woman named Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), who arrives at the eponymous seemingly utopian plane of existence following her death. She later discovers that she was brought there because of an error. In later seasons, she and other residents realize that what they know as the “good place” in reality is the “bad place,” and they are sent there to mentally and emotionally torment each other.
The main cast of the show also includes William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D’Arcy Carden, Manny Jacinto, and Ted Danson. Since its premiere on September 19, 2016, the series has received widespread critical acclaim and drawn highly respectable viewership numbers. With season 4 concluding in early 2020, many of you must be wondering when the show will be back with another season. Here is everything we know about it.
The Good Place Season 5 Release Date: When Will It Premiere?
‘The Good Place’ season 4 premiered on September 26, 2019, on NBC and concluded on January 30, 2020. The season comprises 14 episodes, one more than the previous three seasons. You can watch all the episodes on NBC. In June 2019, NBC revealed that ‘The Good Place’ would conclude with season 4.
In a statement, Schur mentioned that he and the writers had been planning how to proceed with the show since it was renewed for a second season, adding “Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons – just over 50 episodes – was the right lifespan. At times over the past few years we’ve been tempted to go beyond four seasons, but mostly because making this show is a rare, creatively fulfilling joy, and at the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last.”

In a later interview, Schur reflected on whether the series finale lived up to his own expectations. “I don’t know that I had any real idea of where we were going to end things [at the beginning]. It would have been extremely presumptuous of me to write a pilot and say, ‘When this ends four years from now, this would be a good idea.’ We started talking about the ending in a meaningful way probably in season three,” he said.
Schur further added, “In a very general way, we started imagining where we were heading and extrapolating a little bit. I think by the time season three ended, we had a pretty good idea of what would happen. We went into season four with that idea, and it didn’t deviate too much. A lot of things on this show unfolded pretty organically, and the ending is one of them. We had the idea and then built on it, instead of junking it for some other idea.”
As things stand now, it looks like there will not be a fifth season. ‘The Good Place’ season 5 is officially canceled. The good news is, with the series being available on Netflix, fans can binge it anytime they want. In case you wish to fill the void created by the show’s cancellation, you can check out the miniseries, titled ‘The Selection,’ that revolves around Marc Evan Jackson’s character, Shawn, the immortal entity under whom Michael (Danson) works. It is available on ‘The Good Place’s official YouTube channel.
