‘The Lighthouse‘ is the latest film by Roger Eggers who earlier impressed us with his 2015 venture ‘The Witch‘. With a screenplay he co-wrote along with his brother Max, Roger has created a film that is engaging, visceral, and brutal at the same time. ‘The Lighthouse’ was met with loud critical acclaim when it premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival where it managed to grab the FIPRESCI Prize. Although the screenplay initially began as an adaptation of a similarly-titled unfinished short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the end product bears no resemblance to the original story whatsoever.
Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson play the leading characters in this film. Interestingly enough, Dafoe himself contacted Eggers after being thoroughly impressed by ‘The Witch’. You must be eager to know where you can watch ‘The Lighthouse’ online. Well, we are here to tell you just that. But before we do so, let us walk you through what the film is actually about:
What is The Lighthouse About?
The story of ‘The Lighthouse’ is set in the late nineteenth century on a rather secluded island somewhere in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean. The film begins with Ephraim Winslow (Pattinson) being sent to the island to work as an assistant for the veteran lightkeeper called Thomas Wake (Dafoe). Thomas is a rather irritable man whose former assistant had become insane because of the extreme loneliness he suffered at the lighthouse where he had no one to talk to. We see Thomas and Ephraim dealing with each other and trying to maintain their sanity as the loneliness begins to take a toll on them as well. While Thomas himself is the one who looks after the lighthouse, all the other work has been assigned to Ephraim. Slowly, the two of them start developing a friendship, but the darkness all around begins to engulf them. Moreover, no contact with other humans keeps making it difficult for them to distinguish between reality and imagination.
