With the new arrivals continuing to pile up in Manhattan, the Haven finds itself in a precarious situation in the season 3 episode 4 of ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City.’ Although they have plenty in terms of most resources, their medical supplies have drastically dwindled in the past few days. As a result, Luis, the community’s only resident doctor, embarks on a venture with Maggie. The two are headed out of the island and towards a mysterious Trader, who can supposedly get her hands on anything for the right price. This leaves Negan on his own in the city, in charge of deadies duty. As he and Renata continue to prioritize the community’s safety, they also entertain the idea of crossing certain bridges between them. Nonetheless, despite this unusual moment of calm, danger, it seems, is never too far, especially in the chaotic city. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Luis and Maggie Pay a Visit to The Trader
After the previous influx of new residents at the Haven, Renata’s community finds itself in severe depletion of medical supplies. Therefore, when another new arrival tells them about a Trader who lives outside the island, it presents a promising opportunity. Once they’re able to vet the story with relative confidence, Renata decides to send Luis and Maggie on the quest to strike a bargain with this elusive merchant. The surgeon is the only one around who can confirm the legitimacy of these supplies, while the latter is the best, most trustworthy candidate to be his escort. As such, the unlikely duo finds themselves undertaking the trip out of Manhattan. This marks a first for Luis, who had previously never left the city, even before things devolved into chaos all those years ago.
The trip proves to be an effective bonding exercise for the pair. Eventually, they arrive at a reclusive house, where they meet the Trader. Upon hearing their request for the coveted medical items, the merchantile woman is skeptical about their ability to sufficiently trade for them. However, Maggie proves her wrong by offering her something priceless in exchange for the supplies: the plans to the Croat’s methane tanks, which can be used to turn the dead into energy. Unlike its creator’s inclination toward selfish hoarding, Maggie and Renata want to build their new community on the principles of kindness and sharing. Therefore, despite the potential for danger that this technology can have in the wrong hands, they are willing to share it with others, especially for the benefit of their own people and community. Naturally, the Trader is interested in going forward with the deal.
Luis and Maggie Party With a Presbyterian Church
After the Trader sees the tank blueprints, she agrees to make the deal with Maggie and Luis, but only after validating the plans from a rocket engineer friend of hers. As such, she pitches another deal. She would take the duo’s van to make her trip and return with the supplies if everything checks out. Meanwhile, they would have to stay behind and essentially house-sit for her. Although Maggie is reluctant to the deal, she ends up agreeing with it. Initially, she and the surgeon kill some time through conversation and Jenga. Soon enough, their time together is interrupted by a knock on the door. Ever paranoid, the two greet the visitor with distrust and end up tying him up to get some answers.
The stranger introduces himself as Gerald, a survivor from a nearby community who has been in frequent business with the Trader. His intentions seem well enough, and he doesn’t pose much of a threat to the duo. Consequently, when he generously extends an invitation to his community’s annual celebration, Luis and Maggie end up accepting. Thus, they learn about Gerald’s community, a Presbyterian Church that has managed to find a peaceful way of life by fencing itself away from the walkers in the middle of the forest. They live their lives without electricity or technology and focus on fostering human connection and community. During the celebration, Maggie finds herself dwelling in a fantasy of a similar life, feeling the natural pull towards Luis. Nonetheless, in the end, the pair realizes they must return home. The next morning, the Trader returns with her promised supplies and the two strap themselves in for a ride back home.
Renata Offers Negan an Apartment at Her Haven
Back in Manhattan, Negan and Renata helm Haven’s operations, which involve herding deadies to keep up the rising energy demands of the community. While on the job, one of the guards complains about the newcomers starting to take opportunities and resources from the community. He seems to believe the original residents, especially those on zombie-round-up duty, deserve some sort of additional compensation. Naturally, Renata shuts this conversation down swiftly. Afterward, once in the boiler room, the same man, Fabian, ends up nearly becoming walker food. During this time, Renata and Negan work together to save the Haven residents from a cruel fate.
Afterward, the leader offers the complex’s last remaining apartment to the former villain, giving him another chance to join her community. Furthermore, she reveals that, unlike Maggie, she has figured out that he was the one behind the Dama’s death. Nonetheless, given everything he has done for the Haven in the past few days, she wants to give him another chance. Moreover, she believes that Negan himself has changed enough to desire this opportunity for a sense of belonging. The latter’s immediate instinct is to approach this offer with suspicion, accusing Renate of playing mind games to trap him in her community and its rules. Nonetheless, the leader stands firm in her original stance, proving that, no matter what others want to think of her, her leadership style is built on sincerity and trust.
A Sinkhole Opens Up in the Streets of Manhattan
Once Luis and Maggie return to the city, they find themselves on walker duty off the bat. However, something unexpected happens as the duo, alongside Negan, Renata, Dillard, and Hershel, corral the deadies together. An earthquake breaks out, allowing the walkers to come free from within their cage. As a result, a huge fight broke out between the living and the dead. Unfortunately for Maggie, during this altercation, a walker pulls off the ring that she wears around her neck. The ring belongs to her dead husband, Glenn, and has long been a symbol of her lost love. Consequently, she’s knocked off-kilter once the ring becomes lost to the horde of zombies surrounding her.
Luckily, Negan is able to rescue Maggie from the situation, even if she ends up having to leave the lost ring behind. Meanwhile, Renata instructs the others to bag as much food from the storage facility as they can. Although they aren’t able to salvage nearly as many of the supplies as they would have liked, they have no choice but to flee the scene as the building begins to collapse in on itself. In the end, all five of them manage to survive, finding themselves on the opposite sides of a giant sinkhole that tears its way through the city streets. This natural calamity promises to have an impact on the Haven’s future, particularly in terms of their scarce food supplies in the face of a growing population.
