In the late 1980s, Braxton and her four sisters began performing together as The Braxtons and were signed to Arista Records in 1989. Even though their first single, Good Life didn’t do well commercially, it got the attention of Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. They recruited Toni to record a demo for a song to be included in the movie ‘Boomerang,’ and later on included her recording and a duet between Toni and Babyface in the soundtrack for the movie. The even signed her to their record label LaFace and began recording for her debut album.

In 1993, Toni Braxton released her self-titled debut album that peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart. It also won her three Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards.
