In the late 1980s, Braxton and her four sisters began performing together as The Braxtons and were signed to Arista Records in 1989. Even though their first single, Good Life didn’t do well commercially, it got the attention of Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. They recruited Toni to record a demo for a song to be included in the movie ‘Boomerang,’ and later on included her recording and a duet between Toni and Babyface in the soundtrack for the movie. The even signed her to their record label LaFace and began recording for her debut album.

In 1993, Toni Braxton released her self-titled debut album that peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart. It also won her three Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards. Following this, she released her second and her most successful album titled Secrets. The second single from this album was Un-break My Heart, which was Toni’s biggest hit, spending 11 consecutive weeks on the Hot 100 chart and the Hot Dance Singles Sales chart. The song even charted at number 2 in the U.K.

By 1996, Braxton had sold more than 20 million records but was still waiting on her financial rewards. So, she filed a lawsuit against her label and pursued other ventures. During this time, she made her Broadway debut as Belle in Beauty and the Beast on September 9, 1998, becoming the first and only black woman to be cast in the lead role of Belle. She is the executive producer and star in ‘Braxton Family Values,’ a reality television series about that Braxton family that has been airing on We TV since 2011. Braxton is also an executive producer of Tamar & Vince, a spin-off reality series starring her younger sister, Tamar.
