Adapted from DC’s ‘Green Lantern’ comic books, HBO Max’s ‘Lanterns’ is a superhero series created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, making it the third series in the DC Universe (DCU). It focuses on the duo of Lantern Hal Jordan, a seasoned intergalactic cop, and John Stewart, a new, novice recruit, as they team up to solve a mysterious murder that occurs in the small town of Rushville in Nebraska. Right off the bat, Jordan believes that it is an extraterrestrial incident, based on his experience and knowledge. As they dig deeper into the dark mystery, they find themselves at odds with one another and with local law enforcement on several instances. The action-adventure show is set in Rushville, Nebraska, where certain extraterrestrial elements interfere with Jordan and Stewart’s murder investigation.
Lanterns Filming Locations
Initially, the production of ‘Lanterns’ was supposed to take place in Atlanta, Georgia, but by getting the necessary tax credits and studio deals, the makers moved it to Los Angeles County, California. According to reports, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the DC series got underway in February 2025 under the working title ‘Latitude’ and continued for about five months before wrapping up in July of the same year.
Los Angeles County, California
Located in Southern California, Los Angeles County served as the primary production location for ‘Lanterns.’ The filming unit set up camp in the Warner Bros. Studios lot at 4000 Warner Boulevard in the city of Burbank. In particular, they constructed the Stewart family home on Stage 19, which spans 21,600 square feet. Besides being home to a total of 30 sound stages, the film studio also comprises many exterior sets, including New York City-style streets, a Midwest Street, and a jungle lagoon. After receiving the green light to film the DC show in the City of Angels, the makers were delighted and thrilled to support the local businesses and citizens after the tragic January 2025 Southern California wildfires.
Piru, California
In order to fill the visual canvas of ‘Lantern,’ the production team also utilized the terrains of the small, unincorporated historic town of Piru in California’s Ventura County. Piru doubled as Rushville, Nebraska, as the cast and crew members took over its main street to tape the scenes set in the downtown area of Rushville. They were spotted in the city in late March and early April 2025, around Center Street, 3972 Market Street, 665 Piru Square, and at the corner of Via Fustero and Center Street.

Many of the storefronts and businesses were redressed to make the areas stand in for the Nebraska town. According to reports, the crew members also constructed a diner in Piru and seemingly took over the Corazon de Piru coffee shop at 3945 Center Street. In early June 2025, the filming unit reportedly recorded a nighttime scene at the intersection of Main Street and Center Street. Besides ‘Lantern,’ the city of Piru has also hosted the production for numerous other movies and TV shows, such as ‘War of the Worlds,’ ‘Wild Wild West,’ ‘Space Cowboys,’ ‘Twilight Zone: The Movie,’ and ‘True Blood.’
