Set in 1960s Europe, the movie follows the grand adventures of a master thief with a heart of gold and his numerous underworld allies as they race against time to foil a nefarious plan of the Nazis. The hero, Arsène Lupin III, is the grandson of Arsène Lupin, the compelling antihero from French novelist Maurice Leblanc, who made his manga debut in 1905. To help Lupin III with his daring heists that span across the globe, are a few friends and a couple of frenemies (even an Interpol detective). In Nazi-occupied France, Professor Bresson writes the whereabouts of the legendary Eclipse treasure in a booby-trapped diary with only an amulet as they key. The amulet he entrusts to his family but the Nazis arrive to chase them and the Professor and his family all perish in an accident. Except for his infant granddaughter, that is, who is taken in by a Nazi named Lambert and raised as his own granddaughter (though without much affection). When the granddaughter grows up, she attempts to steal the elusive diary but finds herself at loggerheads with Lupin III (who also wants the diary, of course). They join forces to protect the diary from falling into the hands of the Nazis when they find out that the fabled Eclipse treasure is no ordinary treasure.
