When you hear Robert Rodriguez’s name, you might imagine films like ‘El Mariachi,’ ‘Sin City,’ or even the Grindhouse project he did with Quentin Tarantino. However, in a really bizarre spectrum as a filmmaker, Rodriguez is a household name among children thanks to the widely popular ‘Spy Kids’ franchise. Of course, he has only cemented this position with ‘The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.’
The film follows Max, a lonely, bullied boy. He is pulled into a world of adventure by Lavagirl and Sharkboy, two superheroes he’s imagined. Max must assist them in saving the day. The film’s popularity has given rise to a standalone sequel titled ‘We Can Be Heroes.’ Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming movie.
Lavagirl and Sharkboy 2 Release Date:
‘We Can Be Heroes’ does not have a release date yet. However, the movie, which is coming to Netflix, started principal photography in August 2019. Therefore, it is likely to have wrapped up filming and should be in post-production. Even if the project is stuck at this stage, currently, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it shouldn’t take too long to complete the work once the lockdown is relaxed. Thus, Lavagirl and Sharkboy 2 i.e. ‘We Can Be Heroes’ is likely to release sometime in 2021.
We Can Be Heroes Cast: Who Could Be In It?
‘We Can Be Heroes’ boasts of a stellar cast. We have Priyanka Chopra in the role of Ms. Gradenko. The other cast members include Pedro Pascal, Christian Slater, Boyd Holbrook, and Haley Reinhart. Rodriguez has also revealed that the characters of Sharkboy and Lavagirl will be back, but only the latter has a speaking role. Taylor Dooley is expected to reprise the part.
We Can Be Heroes Plot: What Can It Be About?
The premise will see Sharkboy and Lavagirl as grown-ups now. They are superhero parents who have their own daughter, who displays shark and lava powers. The film is about two generations of superheroes, and when alien invaders kidnap the parents, the kids have to team up to save the day. The children don’t just need to figure out their superpowers, but also to work in a team. Ultimately, they have to try their best to rescue their parents as well.
Rodriguez explained the thought that went behind the project, saying, “…we came up with the idea of…like an Avengers team, but they all have kids. The kids have powers, but they don’t know how to use them because they’re just so young.” He further explained, “The whole movie I got eleven superhero kids in every shot.”
It is clear that ‘We Can Be Heroes’ will shift the focus on to a new generation. It is about accepting responsibilities and taking up the mantle. The film focuses on following in the parents’ footsteps. There is something oddly comforting about the well-tried premise. Moreover, the movie holds a degree of hope, which is evident in the title, inspired by the David Bowie song.
Rodriguez plans on delivering yet another action film meant for children. If the premise sounds too close to what ‘Spy Kids’ is, that is because the director is going back to a tried and tested formula of success. We have a similar concept but with superheroes thrown into the mix. At a time when the genre is famous amongst viewers, Rodriguez will add his spin to things.
