Black Doves Season 2 Ending Explained: Is Helen’s Cover Blown?

The second season of Netflix’s ‘Black Doves’ brings back Helen Webb, putting her in an even higher-stakes situation than the last time. She has spent more than a decade as the wife of Wallace, a rising politician. In the Season 1 finale, events unfold in a way that leads him to become the next PM of the country. This puts Helen and the Black Doves in an unprecedented position. However, with the promise of great power comes greater danger, and this time, Helen’s handler, Reed, seems to be at the center of it all. The season ends with a devastating change for Helen and the organization she serves, posing a huge question mark on their futures. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Black Doves Season 2 Recap

Wallace Webb is set to move into 10 Downing Street as the next PM, which means Helen’s work is going to get even more taxing. At the beginning of Season 2, we find her in Paris, where Wallace is laying the groundwork for a peace summit. Meanwhile, Helen is tasked with breaking into the room of Alexei Chernov, a Russian oligarch, and gaining access to his computer. She is to extract the files focusing on “Wildflower.” As usual, when Reed gets these files, she doesn’t tell Helen anything more. However, Helen can sense that something is off with her handler, who later goes missing. The Paris mission also introduces her to Laila, another Black Doves agent, who later turns out to have been removed from the organization six months ago. This means that the mission was truly off the books and had a much more personal connection to Reed.

Elsewhere, Sam is arrested after he kills a former assassin. In prison, he meets a mysterious man named Patrick who offers him freedom. In exchange, Sam must kill four people, no questions asked. At the time, the deal feels like the only option Sam has, but soon, the real stakes of the bargain come to light. It seems all his targets are former Black Doves. To make matters worse, Sam is pressured to do Patrick’s bidding because the latter has damning evidence against Helen. Meanwhile, Helen’s marriage is going through a rough patch as Wallace’s doubts from last season have only gotten worse. And then, MI5 starts looking into her background, which is another problem to solve on top of the mystery of the missing Reed.

Who is Vita? Is She Dead?

As the details of Reed’s past come to light, it becomes clear that her long-lost daughter, Vita, is a major part of the equation. The last time Reed saw her was in Berlin in 1988, and since then, there has been no sign of her. It turns out that after being abandoned by her mother, Vita was sent to a Soviet orphanage, where she was raised in hardship. All these years, her mother never bothered to look for her, which fueled her anger toward Reed. It got worse when, years later, her father, who was supposed to have died that night, tracked her down comparatively easily. So, for Vita, Reed and the Black Doves became the villains who ruined her life.

Driven by the desire to bring down the organization, Vita helped create Kestrel, named after the anarchic group her father had been a part of. While her agents worked to root out old Black Doves, especially the ones who were in Berlin with her mother, Vita created a different life for herself. She became Katia, marrying the oligarch Alexei Chernov, who was also involved in the Berlin debacle. The marriage brought her into political circles, allowing her to be close to people like Wallace, Helen, and the US defense envoy, Cecile. While Vita could have her revenge on her mother, she knew that rooting out the Black Doves would be another task entirely.

She would need to expose them to the point that they couldn’t function anymore. This is why she targets the peace summit and has Cecile killed. This major terrorist attack on foreign diplomats would bring international focus on the secret organization. At the same time, she also tries to have Helen kill Wallace, which means the British secret services would also leave no stone unturned to find the culprits and bring them to justice. Since anonymity has been the Black Doves’ greatest asset, bringing them out in the open would not just cripple them but destroy them entirely; that is what Vita and Kestrel are focused on.

Unfortunately, they fail to account for unexpected elements like Laila, Eleanor, and Williams, who barge into the Black Doves’ headquarters. As the gunfight ensues, Vita ends up catching a stray bullet. She hides away in a secluded space, but she knows she is so badly wounded that she cannot recover from it. In her final moments, Reed finds her and reveals that the reason she didn’t come looking for Vita is that she thought her daughter would be better off without her. Despite this, Reed confesses that she never stopped loving her, hoping this might be some consolation to her daughter before she breathes her last.

Is Helen’s Cover Blown?

What makes Helen an indispensable asset to the Black Doves is her relationship with Wallace, which has developed over 12 years. Following the events of Season 1, Wallace starts to suspect his wife, believing that she might be having an affair. But then he becomes the PM, and his wife comes under scrutiny by the secret services, who are unable to find anything about her past. When they do find something, it raises several questions, which are shared with Wallace. So, when the attack happens during the peace summit, and Helen is unshaken by the whole thing, he can’t help but ask her who she really is.

Before Helen can even begin to process the situation, she receives a message from Vita. It turns out that Kestrel got to her nanny, Marie, who now has Helen’s children. To ensure their safety, Helen must kill Wallace. Since the conversation is over the phone, she types a message to Wallace, asking him to remain silent no matter what. To distract the people on the other side of the phone, she starts a monologue suggesting a confession to her husband about how, in some ways, he has no idea who she really is. At the end of the day, Wallace and the kids are saved, but Helen is now in a tough situation with her husband.

Later, when the MI5 agent asks Wallace about the attack, the PM lies to save his wife. Still, Wallace needs an answer, so at the end of the episode, he and Helen sit down to have a proper chat. He asks her to start with her real name and go from there. Given that the part about her stepsister has already come to light, she will likely tell him the truth about her childhood and why her stepsister went to prison. However, that might be the extent of her truth. She will likely keep the part about the Black Doves a secret, and hopefully Wallace will be satisfied enough with the half-truths to leave her alone for a while.

What Happens to Sam? Is He Retired?

While Helen decides to stay and fight for the life she has built, Sam seems to be done with everything. It has been clear for a while that the life of an assassin is taking a toll on him. He has already been forced to leave Michael, the man he loved with all his heart. And in Season 2, he is forced to kill Jerry, the hotel concierge he had been having an affair with. We also get a glimpse into his life during the break when he went to a village in Italy, which shows his search for some quiet and calm in his deeply violent life. While he is repeatedly pulled back into that world, his degrading mental health shows that he is on the brink of breaking down.

If Sam wasn’t already thinking about leaving it all behind, he starts to give it more serious thought following his conversation with Ambrose. She retired from the Black Doves and got 20 good years before the past caught up with her. Two decades of a proper life feels like a good deal to Sam, and the more chaotic things get, the more he reflects upon it. So, when the dust settles on the conflict with Kestrel, he tells Helen that he is going away for a while. He doesn’t know how long he will be gone, but he assures her that he will be one phone call away in case she needs him again.

In the last scene, we see him return to that Italian village, where he had found some semblance of peace all those years ago. Discovering the true identity of the local priest he’d killed also helps put things into perspective. Given how traumatic things have been for a while, it makes sense that Sam prefers to stay away from all that for as long as possible. However, given how the Black Doves’ troubles are only just beginning, it won’t be long before he is roped back into the chaos all over again.

What Happens to Black Doves? Are Cecile, Dani and Marie Dead?

The second season becomes a fight for survival for the Black Doves. Vita and Kestrel agents make one fatal move after another and almost succeed in bringing the whole thing down. What makes them even more dangerous is how easily they can reach Black Doves agents like Dani and Marie. Following the events of Season 1, Dani is confined to a desk job, which she hates. So, when Patrick offers her a chance to be more than that, she jumps at the opportunity. She breaks down the defenses, allowing the Kestrel agents to walk into the Black Doves building without any problems.

In the same vein, they also reach Marie, a Black Doves agent positioned within the Webb household to keep an eye on Helen and be there in case things go awry. She has been the family’s nanny for years, which is why the betrayal feels even worse to Helen. This is why, even as Marie assures her she would never hurt her kids, Helen is in no mood to hear her excuses and shoots her dead on the spot. Meanwhile, the arrival of Laila, Eleanor, and Williams gives the Black Doves a fighting chance. As the gunfight erupts, Dani tries to run away. But as soon as she steps into the elevator, Eleanor throws a grenade towards her, which explodes as soon as the doors close.

The fight ends with the Black Doves losing a lot of their people. In fact, only Conteh and Reed are the surviving leaders who must rebuild the organization. They have a huge mess to clear up because of the disrupted peace summit and the US envoy, Cecile, being killed by Vita. The cleanup will be much more difficult than anything before. Still, they are not giving up so easily. To make matters more interesting, Helen tells Reed that she won’t be just some spy wife anymore. She wants a more active role in shaping the organization’s future, and, all things considered, Reed is not averse to that idea. It seems like the dawn of a new age for the Black Doves.

What Happens to Patrick? Is Kestrel Still Functional?

While Vita may have emerged as the instigating factor against Reed, Patrick takes the lead in dismantling the Black Doves. He is the one who reaches out to people like Sam, Dani, and Marie, using them to make the secret organization’s fall seem imminent. His presence also proves that there is more to Kestrel than Vita. While she dies in the shootout at the Black Doves office, Patrick manages to slip out. However, this doesn’t mean he is stepping away or going into hiding. To make his presence known, he bumps into Helen and hands her a Kestrel calling card, so she knows his organization is not yet beaten. Later, Reed tells Helen that Patrick was last seen boarding a flight to Tokyo.

What makes things more interesting is that Patrick and Kestrel seem to have much more information than Helen and the Black Doves would like. Earlier, the MI5 agent tells Wallace that their concerns about Helen were flagged when a woman named Bonnie Weir, claiming to be her stepsister, tried to reach out to her before dying. He notes that initially, they couldn’t find anything about Helen and her childhood. But then, slowly, all the seemingly erased information started to pop up. It seems as if someone had been presenting that information to MI5 to nudge them towards Helen. While it is unclear how all this information suddenly came to light, there is a strong chance Kestrel may be behind it.

Since exposing Helen’s cover was a major motive, it would make sense that they will continue to work towards that end in the future. With MI5 looking into her, things are definitely going to get worse for Helen, even if she brings Wallace into the loop. The Black Doves don’t have any loyalty towards any country, or at least, they haven’t had that so far. So, the British secret services are not going to like the idea of another secret organization floating around and so deeply embedded in their politics that it has access to the country’s PM. Kestrel is likely to use this situation to make things worse for the already crippled Black Doves. This means that not only will we see Patrick again, but more Kestrel agents will likely show up next time.
