What Happened to Michael? Did Omari Douglas Leave Black Doves?

The complicated lives of spies and assassins continue in the second season of Netflix’s ‘Black Doves.’ The story picks up after the turbulent Season 1 finale, which puts Helen Webb in an unprecedented position. Her husband, Wallace, becomes the Prime Minister, which means she now has access to the topmost position in the country. Meanwhile, her friend, Sam, is going through a tough time, trying to find meaning in his life as he becomes increasingly disillusioned with his profession. Things get progressively worse for him, and he loses so much more that he takes a major step by the end. Part of his decision is also driven by the parting with Michael in Season 1. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Sam Will Likely Never Cross Paths With Michael Again

The life of an assassin is pretty dangerous, but that doesn’t mean assassins can’t fall in love. Sam is great at killing people, but at the same time he is a very emotional person who doesn’t want to hurt anyone who doesn’t deserve it. And yet, he finds that the people around him, innocent as they might be, are always in some danger. This is why, in Season 1, he leaves behind the love of his life, Michael. Flashbacks reveal that Sam and Michael had been faring well until Sam’s refusal to kill a child turned into a massive assault on him. He had to run away to save himself and Michael. In Season 1, he reunites with Michael under extenuating circumstances. It has been seven years since they saw each other, and neither feels any less about the other.

This time, Sam has to come clean and tell Michael everything. While he tries to leave again, he is pulled back to the safety and love that Michael represents for him. Sam desperately craves that life, and he is repeatedly tempted to get back in that relationship. However, the ongoing crisis also reminds him how dangerous it would be for Michael to be with him. So, at the end of the season, Sam has to make an executive decision: they cannot be together again. They say their goodbyes, and this time, things really are final. Sam knows he cannot darken Michael’s doorstep again, especially not with his friends and colleagues in tow. To save the man he loves, Sam must leave him alone. The second season puts Sam through another test, leaving him emotionally and psychologically drained.

Once again, he finds a distraction in the arms of another man. He starts an affair with Jerry, a hotel concierge who is fascinated by him. But when it seems things are getting better, they get much, much worse. Sam is forced to kill Jerry with his own hands, and that pulls him back to the tragic reality that he is a danger to the people around him. This loss takes a major psychological toll on him, and he is so tired of everything that at the end, he tells Helen he is going away. Sam returns to the little village in Italy where he’d hidden earlier. This shows that his belief in staying away from everyone for their own good is reinforced. This is why he’d rather never cross paths with Michael again. Given how the Season 2 finale sets up an even more turbulent time for Black Doves, there is a good chance Sam will be roped back into that chaos, even if it’s for Helen. And this is why Michael is better off away, with no connection to Sam or his violent world.
