In May 2022, Moriah Wilson, the celebrated cyclist from Vermont, was staying with her friend Caitlin Cash at her home in Austin, Texas. She had traveled there for a tournament, and the two had grown close over the years. One day, when Cash returned home, she found her friend unresponsive, and even though she performed CPR and quickly got help, Moriah passed away. Netflix’s ‘The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson’ presents the full account of the case in detail and also features interviews with Cash herself, who spoke about enduring the loss and the guilt she has carried over the years.
Caitlin Cash Sent a Picture of Moriah Wilson to the Latter’s Mother on the Morning of the Incident
Caitlin Cash was running a small inn in East Burke, Vermont, and had moved there entirely on her own. It was just after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, and she wanted to do something on her own terms. She had joined several local biking and cycling groups, and it was at one of these events that she met Karen and Eric Wilson, the parents of Anna Moriah Wilson. They really liked her, especially seeing that she was managing a small inn by herself, and whenever they met, they exchanged pleasant words. During one of these conversations, Cash mentioned that she was a big fan of Moriah, and that’s when she realized she had been talking to the parents of the very person whose skills she had long admired.

From there, Cash and Moriah connected and became very good friends. Even when Cash moved back to Austin, Texas, they kept in touch, and in early 2022, Moriah traveled there for an event. She stayed with Cash, and the two had a very pleasant time together. In May 2022, when Moriah was set to compete in the Gravel Locos race, she asked Cash if she could stay with her again, and she gladly said yes. Cash did say that she had heard of Colin Strickland, but also shared that she felt Moriah was not very clear about where she stood with him. While that did not make her very happy, she understood that it was not her decision to make.
On the morning of May 11, 2022, the day after she had arrived, Cash and Moriah had a great time. They sat, talked, and had coffee together, enjoying a slow morning. When Moriah walked out of the apartment with her bicycle, Cash even took a video and sent it to Karen, telling her that her daughter was safe with her. That same night, when Cash returned home around 9:45 pm, she found Moriah shot in the chest in her apartment. She called 911, who instructed her to perform CPR until they arrived, but they were unable to save her. Cash was taken in for interrogation, and her hands were checked for gunshot residue before she was eventually cleared.

Caitlin Cash shared that she felt a deep sense of guilt, as her friend had passed away in her home, a place where she believed she was supposed to keep her safe. She spoke about the numerous “what if” scenarios that ran through her mind, questioning if things would have been different had she come home earlier, asked Moriah to come along, or not left her alone. Cash spoke to Karen and Eric as well and said it was especially difficult given that she had just sent that reassuring text that morning. Cash’s testimony became extremely important during the trial against Kaitlin Armstrong. She gave a detailed account of how she found her friend, the CPR she performed, and the bullet mark in her apartment.

After Armstrong was convicted in 2023, Cash read a victim impact statement, saying, “So many people in this room have lost so much… I’m angry at you, at the utter tragic nature, at the senselessness at not being able to hear Mo’s voice again… I feel deep sadness for the road ahead.” She also shared that while many expected her not to return to her apartment, she felt a sign that it was where she wanted to be. She said she filled the space with positive energy and intention. What has stayed with her most is the memory of the last morning she spent with her friend. She still remembers how meaningful it was, and how she will always remember Moriah.
