Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, Hulu’s ‘Furious‘ takes a dramatic turn with the sixth episode, as Alice and Catherine not only interact, but momentarily become pretend-friends. The farce is soon discovered, though, and just as Catherine tries to escape, she makes sure to reveal her grand purpose to Alice. There is more to this story than just killing Jay Easton, as she also has to find the man who killed Isabel and free her daughter, Elena. As the episode ends with Catherine shooting Marshall to protect Alice, the follow-up episode 7, titled ‘Some Days It Don’t Come Easy,’ is entirely about the aftermath. Alice must rise from the ashes and get to the truth, or guide Catherine towards it, before those with power put a stop to this investigation for good. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Marshall Survives, But the Case is Now Out of the FBI’s Hands
‘Furious’ season 1 episode 7 begins with Alice waking up at the hospital, still reeling from the effects of the overdose. There are two big reveals waiting for her, however, as not only is Marshall alive, but Catherine has also managed to escape, again. Viciously enough, Nora believes that Alice went too soft, and that she should have given Catherine chase and let Marshall bleed to his death, killing two birds with one stone. Now, the team is further from their goal than ever, and with Ed suspending Nora and taking charge of the operation, little can be done. Meanwhile, Danny is at the hospital too, and is confronted by Marshall’s mother, who doesn’t waste an opportunity to pin the blame on Alice, bringing up her rough childhood and teen pregnancy. For Danny, however, this only serves to contextualize what he found on the USB drive, further complicating things.
At the office, Choi sits down with Ed and the NYPD higher-ups, who are furious about Marshall getting shot. Ed, of course, uses this situation to his advantage, willingly handing over the entire case to the trigger-friendly higher-ups, knowing that they would much rather kill Catherine on sight than let the case go any further. Meanwhile, we get a ghastly look into Jay Easton’s life, where it is revealed that he is still an active predator. Not just that, his daughter, Emma, seems to be helping him through this entire act, bringing him to a hidden room in the house, where young girls, most likely minors, are trafficked and subjected to untold horrors. Completely unaware of any of this, Alice returns home that night with Danny, who has to supervise her overnight to check for any adverse reaction to the meds.
Alice Remembers a Part of Her Past That She Had Buried
Though he has the USB drive by his side, Danny is unable to bring the subject up until the next morning, when Alice wakes him up by expressing a desire to run away from New York. She wants to join him at the cabin by the shore, where he has always wanted to head out. As if that’s not all, Alice then confesses to being in love with him, and while Danny is overwhelmed, he realizes that there is still a bigger question at play. At last, he reveals everything he knows about the USB drive and the fact that Alice is in one of the videos. Notably, though, the man with her isn’t Jay Easton, and Alice doesn’t seem to remember anything from that time, either. Still, Danny decides not to hand the drive over as evidence and instead leaves it with Alice.
Not long after Danny leaves, Alice’s half-sister arrives at the house, believing that Alice overdosed because of an addiction. This brief interaction unravels very quickly as Alice decides she no longer has to hide her true feelings. In reality, Alice’s parents never once cared for her the way they care for their second daughter, and because of that, she decides to cut ties with them for good. Instead, she arrives at a bar where Nora is drunk and singing to her heart’s content. The goal is still to catch the person known as Big Man, and Alice believes Nora can help her with that. Sure enough, Nora’s contacts lead the pair to Bronx, where Alice finds Elena right alongside Big Man. Despite their attempts to escape, Alice eventually gets hold of the teen and decides to use this one and only chance to its fullest.
Catherine, Alice, and Ed George Get Into an Elaborate Cat-and-Mouse Chase
As it turns out, Catherine had told Elena that Isabel was her older sister, and when Alice hears that, she uses it as a chance to turn the two against each other. This unnerves even Nora for a second before Elena rings up Catherine under Alice’s orders, and the phone is heard from the right next door. Catherine was there this entire time, hiding, and Alice doesn’t waste a second in gaining the upper hand. From the moment she woke up in the hospital, the label of being too soft has been haunting Alice, and to fix just that, she lays out a rather elaborate plan. If Catherine is allowed to leave right now, she can drive up to Connecticut and take her revenge on Jay Easton in his own mansion. Following suit, Alice gets to enter the house and authorize its search regardless of what happens, ensuring that Jay goes down either way.
As Catherine runs away and Alice gives chase, Nora is left with Elena and has to call Danny for a pickup. Meanwhile, Ed George, who checked the CCTV footage and found Danny hiding the pen drive, also sneaks into his car to make a deal. Though he promises riches and perhaps even a promotion, Danny refuses to budge, suspecting that Ed is in one of the videos as well. When Ed tries to threaten Danny’s son, he snaps, kicking the ASAC to the ground before racing away. With all the pieces of the puzzle now out in the open, the episode cuts to Jay’s house, with Ed alerting him and Emma to what is about to happen. Though Emma had already destroyed most of the tapes, Jay reveals he has more hidden in his safe. This happens to be perfect timing, as the episode ends with Catherine walking up to the mansion, ready to light up this powder keg.
