Gunnar Shaw: Where is Moriah Wilson’s Ex-Boyfriend Now?

Directed by Marina Zenovich, Netflix’s ‘The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson’ is a documentary carefully chronicling the May 11, 2022, homicide of the titular pro cyclist in Austin, Texas. It details everything from her happy upbringing in Vermont to her vibrant life as an athlete and from her heinous, untimely demise to her killer’s attempts to evade justice, along with much more. There is actually a significant focus on her love life, too, so her “first real boyfriend,” Gunnar Shaw, also features in the original to shine a light upon just how loving and fierce she was in every way.

Gunnar Shaw and Moriah Wilson Genuinely Cared For One Another

It was during a casual mountain biking session in beautiful Burke, Vermont, in the summer of 2017, when Gunnar Shaw first came across Anne Moriah “Mo” Wilson through a mutual friend. The fitness enthusiast had simply asked if she would be able to keep up when told she would be joining them, to which the friend’s only response was a cheeky, “That’s not going to be a problem.” He had no idea what the latter meant until he rode alongside her, witnessing just how focused, skilled, and talented she was. “It’s not often that you meet another person who can keep up,” he said.

Gunnar stated in the documentary, “I really liked that she was a strong athlete, but not in an egotistical way. Just in a, you know, ‘I’m here, I’m strong, and I’m not afraid to show you my strength.'” He admittedly also really liked her reserved nature because he is the total opposite, but he knew her quietness stemmed from her always being introspective, thinking, and trying to grow. The fact that they both grew up in Vermont before enrolling at Dartmouth University further gave them a lot of common ground, leading them to start dating when she was a sophomore. We specify her because he had already graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in 2014 and was trying to relocate to California for work, so they were long-distance for almost 2 years.

Gunnar and Moriah truly saw a future together, so they moved to Mill Valley in October 2020 to establish a base. After all, she had graduated from college, and he had settled into a good job. “I was very sure about things at that point…,” he said in the original. “It was a ton of excitement… of ‘Can’t wait to live in the same city together.’ We’re doing this journey, and it felt right.” However, he claims that because she was so focused on her pro cycling ambitions, their romance gradually lost much of its spark. Since they still cared for one another, they had a candid conversation before deciding to part ways in the fall of 2021. “It was a hard thing for both of us,” he asserted. “I remember her saying, ‘I’m more in love with biking, and I find all the emotion and feedback and pleasure in my life from riding my bike.’ And yeah, that said kind of all I needed to hear.”

Successful in His Professional Life, Gunnar Shaw Currently Prefers to Keep Away From the Limelight

Although Gunnar and Moriah broke up in the fall of 2021, they still remained on amicable terms because that’s just who they were. They reportedly kept in contact because they also had many mutual friends, so they were well aware of one another’s recent experiences. Therefore, the moment he saw he had a missed call from his ex-girlfriend’s mother and two missed calls from his own father early on May 11, 2022, he knew something terrible had transpired. However, he could never have imagined he would receive the news of her murder, so when officials contacted him mere hours later, he cooperated to the best of his abilities.

He admitted that while they were exes, there was no bad blood between them, and he was fully supportive of her cycling career, shortly following which he was cleared as a suspect. His phone location records proved he had no involvement in the crime. Since then, Gunnar has understandably chosen to keep his personal experiences well away from the limelight, focusing on his family, friends, and potential relationships in private. Thus, all we know for certain about his current standing is that he is based in San Francisco, California, where he is thriving as the Director at Harris Williams, an investment banking company.

Gunnar kick-started his career with an internship at UBS in 2011, followed by a Summer Analyst role (internship) at Morgan Stanley in 2013. He landed a full-time Analyst job at the same esteemed organization after graduation in 2014 and remained there until September 2017. That’s when he moved from New York to California to join Harris Williams, initially as an Analyst before being promoted to Associate in January 2021. He then became Vice President in March 2022 and was most recently promoted to Director in February 2026. He is undeniably proud of everything he has achieved as of writing.
