The Pogues meet their most challenging adventure in the fifth and final season of Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks.’ While they had faced life-threatening situations before, they had always managed to make it out alive and in one piece, even if it meant letting go of the treasure that they had been chasing. The ending of Season 4, however, brings them face-to-face with reality in an utterly heartbreaking manner. JJ is killed in Morocco while chasing the Blue Crown. While everyone feels the loss deeply, Kiara is the one impacted by it the most since she saw him being killed right in front of her. The desire to avenge him puts her on a dangerous path and leads her to believe in things she wouldn’t otherwise. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Kiara Comes Dangerously Close to Dying Several Times
Watching her best friend and boyfriend getting stabbed to death by his father in front of her eyes while she helplessly watched leads Kiara to set her mind on revenge. While the others are still thinking about the Blue Crown, she wants nothing more than to look Groff in the eye and kill him with her own hands. However, this quest also leads her into dangerous waters, where she herself comes so close to dying that she sees JJ himself. The first time it looks like she might die for good is when Groff abducts her during a masquerade party, where she and her friends aim to steal the design of the scytale from Denmark Tanny’s journals. Seeing that she will not give up coming after him, Groff decides to remove the threat.
He sedates her, puts her on a boat, takes her out to sea, ties her with a weight, and throws her into the water. As she is pulled towards the seabed, she starts to lose her breath, and there is a point when it looks like she is on the door of the afterlife. She hears JJ calling out to her from the other side. Fortunately, her friends had spotted Groff abducting her, and they weren’t far behind. Before she can completely drown, John B finds her, frees her from the weight, and pulls her back out of the water. While she survives the assault, the near-death experience shakes her to her core. This also shows just how dangerous Groff can be and how much more careful they need to be to bring him to justice.
The next time Kiara stares death in the face is in Azerbaijan. She and her friends stop Anton Finch from going to the place where he intends to test the Crown’s power and bring his daughter, Sadie, back to life. Kiara takes the Crown from him, believing there could be some truth to the relic’s power, and tries to perform the enchantment during a meteor shower. The result is not what she expected, but it does give her the closure she needed. So, when Finch catches up to her and puts a gun to her head, she not only accepts her circumstances but also welcomes the idea of death because that would mean she can see JJ again. Once again, her friends come to the rescue, intervening in time to scare Finch away and keep Kiara from dying.
Kiara Finally Has Her Revenge and Moves On
The conclusion of the Blue Crown quest and the discovery of its true nature end Kiara’s hope of bringing JJ back to life. It also paves the path for her to move on with her life. However, one thing remains unresolved. Groff has not been brought to justice yet, and he is still hell-bent on wreaking havoc on the people around him. When Hurricane Cassandra moves towards Kildare, the island is evacuated. In the chaos of finding a way out with her parents, Kiara discovers that Groff has stolen a boat. She realizes that this is the last time she will be able to get to him. If he leaves this time, he might never be brought to justice again.
So, while her friends are occupied otherwise, she decides to find Groff and kill him herself. She figures that he must have gone to Blackstone, and she turns out to be right. This is his final spot before he loads the gold he stole from Rose on his boat, intending to use it to finance his scheme to find Anton Finch and the Blue Crown. Right as he sails away, she jumps on the boat and catches him off guard. He isn’t entirely surprised to see her and sees it as an opportunity to finish what he started. If she dies in the storm, no one would blame him. At one point, it does look like he will succeed, but luck turns out to be on Kiara’s side.
In the altercation, she ties him to the mast, which breaks due to the strong winds and takes him down into the depths of the water. Ironically, Groff dies exactly how he had planned to kill Kiara the last time. While she survives Groff, Kiara still has a raging hurricane and a boat with a hole. Now, she has to fight against nature for her survival. This leads her to throw the gold into the water, hoping it will reduce the boat’s weight and keep it afloat until help arrives. But she is pushed into the water by the boat’s turbulence, and with no help in sight, she calls out to JJ to help her.
At one point, she decides to leave her fate in the hands of a higher power, and once again, her friends come to the rescue just in time. With the Crown gone, Groff dead, and the gold retrieved, all conflicts are resolved. And this time, Kiara really does move on. She goes on to become a marine biologist and save dolphins, which is what she had wanted to do all along. This is also what brought her and JJ together the first time, and through her work, she intends to honor him.
