The quest to find the Blue Crown takes the Pogues on another harrowing journey, testing them on an unprecedented scale in the fifth season of Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks.’ What makes things more difficult this time around is that they are not the only ones looking for the crown. They have at least two more interested parties. One is Groff, JJ’s biological father, who is also his murderer. The second is Anton Finch, the leader of a mercenary group called the Corsairs, who has a deeply personal reason to seek the crown. Much like the Pogues, he refuses to give up on the crown because it is much more than money to him. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Anton Finch Fights Hard to Keep the Crown
Long before the Pogues came upon the information regarding the Blue Crown and what it is capable of, Anton Finch had been searching for it. Unlike the others, including the Pogues, his reason wasn’t to have riches beyond imagination. The only thing he wished was to bring his daughter, Sadie, back. His extensive research about the artifact had convinced him that it was capable of bringing the dead back to life, and that was the only reason he looked so dedicatedly for it that he was ready to kill other people. In the fifth season, he finally gets the Blue Crown, thanks to one of the contacts who reaches out to him after Groff tries to have the piece authenticated. While the Pogues try to take it away, Finch succeeds in keeping hold of it.
In the same vein, he keeps his people focused on finding the Scytale, which is necessary to determine where a person should go and what they should say to have their wish fulfilled. Much like Sarah and John B, they, too, discover that Sarah’s mother, Ellie, has the staff. Their timely intervention saves Sarah and John B’s lives, but it also takes away the Scytale. Once the code on the staff is broken, Finch has everything he needs to make his wish and get his daughter. However, once again, the Pogues catch up to him. They create a massive hurdle in his path by destroying the bridge to his destination. The injured Finch is unable to do anything as Kiara takes the crown from his hands and leaves to make her own wish to bring back JJ.
Finch and his men finally catch up to Kiara, but by then she has made her wish and realized it doesn’t bring back the dead in the conventional sense. She tries to explain the same to Finch, who is disappointed to realize that he will not be able to reunite with his daughter. If Kiara’s wish had come true, it would have been the final confirmation for Finch. While the meteor showers were done by the time he got the crown back, they would return soon, and Finch could make his wish again. But since Kiara is unable to bring back JJ, he realizes that Sadie is not coming back either. Still, even without granting wishes, the Blue Crown remains an invaluable treasure. So, Finch keeps it to himself.
Finch Suffers Grievous Injuries But Survives
When the Pogues blow up the bridge, Anton Finch refuses to reverse his car. Since he is running out of time, he thinks he can still make it, but he is wrong. His car falls into the river below, and it is by some stroke of fate that he and his men don’t die horrible deaths. Even with the injuries, he manages to reach the place where Kiara has made the wish to bring JJ back. While he is sad that the wish-granting thing doesn’t work, he is also angry at Kiara for stealing this opportunity from him. He has never been kind to those who crossed him, and for him, Kiara is no different. He is ready to kill her until her friends show up. Pope fires a timely shot that hits Finch on his arm. He hadn’t meant to kill the guy, but it was a warning shot that should anything happen to Kiara, Pope is entirely capable of shooting him down for good.
Having already suffered a lot of injuries and heartbreak, and with the Blue Crown back in his possession, Finch decides to leave the Pogues to their own fate. Instead of escalating the conflict, he walks away, leaving his young adversaries with nothing despite their troubles. Since he is still very much alive and breathing and doesn’t have any fatal injuries, it is clear that Finch will live to see another day. Since he still has the crown, there is a good chance he will return for the next meteor shower to make his wish, just to see if it works out for him. Even if his wish is not granted and he doesn’t get his daughter back, he can still sell the crown for unimaginable riches. It is a win-win situation for him in any case.
