Who is Ellie? Who Plays Sarah’s Mom in Outer Banks?

The mystery of the Blue Crown deepens in the fifth season of Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks.’ The Pogues make the last attempt to get their hands on the ancient treasure that could change their lives. However, the road to this treasure leads them to some very unexpected people. Sarah, particularly, faces a blast from the past as she finally meets the person who has been missing from her life for more than sixteen years. Since the first season of ‘Outer Banks,’ we know that she has been living with her father and stepmother. While it was mentioned her mother had abandoned her and her siblings when they were young, it isn’t until the fifth season that we get a true picture of what really happened to her. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Natalie Brown Portrays the Enigmatic Ellie in Outer Banks

Natalie Brown plays the role of Sarah’s mother, Ellie, in the fifth season of ‘Outer Banks.’ The Ontario native is known for her work in TV shows such as ‘The Strain’ and ‘Sophie,’ and in movies such as ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days‘ and ‘Dawn of the Dead.’ Brown started working in the entertainment industry from a young age. She was sixteen when she entered the world of modeling, but eventually steered towards acting. She attended York University, where she studied fine arts and started landing supporting roles in movies and TV shows in the late 1990s. Since then, she has considerably expanded the range of her characters.

Brown has appeared in zombie and horror shows like ‘iZombie‘ and ‘Channel Zero,’ supernatural shows like ‘Being Human,’ and drama shows like ‘Covert Affairs.’ For her lead role in the Canadian sitcom, ‘Sophie,’ she received a nomination for Best Lead Performance in a Comedy at the Gemini Awards. Her more recent acting credits include ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ ‘Accused,’ ‘Jack Ryan,’ ‘Home Free,’ and ‘Ashgrove.’ In ‘Outer Banks,’ she appears as Ellie, who has been missing from Sarah and her siblings’ lives for the past sixteen or so years. For years, she was portrayed as a bad mother who abandoned her children. However, when Sarah finally meets her, the truth turns out to be something else entirely.

Ellie Turns Out to be Another Victim of Ward’s Manipulations

Not surprisingly, Ward had lied to his children about why their mother left them. He told them that she didn’t love them, so she ran away. In truth, Ellie loved her children very much and wanted to take them away from Ward. While she had married him for love, she had realized that he was not the man she had fallen in love with. His unending greed turned him into a cruel and villainous person, and she didn’t want to be around him anymore. When she threatened to leave him and take the kids, Ward framed her as a bad mother. At the time, she was already in a vulnerable spot. So, he drugged her drink, put their newborn daughter next to her, while spreading some cocaine on the table. He called the authorities to paint a terrible picture of her.

With this, Ward ensured that even if Ellie left him, she would never be able to get the custody of her kids, which is exactly what happened. To make matters worse, he also made sure that she didn’t get to see her children at all. Apart from using the law to his end, he also scared her to the point that she never even thought about trying to reach out to her children. So, when Sarah finally finds her, and she discovers Ward is dead, she is happy that she’ll finally be able to be with her children. With the air cleared between them, Ellie becomes an important part of the family and is even seen attending Sarah and John B’s wedding. Thus, she, too, gets her own version of a happy ending in Kildare.
