On January 24, 2023, the entire world turned upside down for the Clancys and the Musgroves as Lindsay Musgrove Clancy allegedly killed her 3 young children before attempting suicide. The then-32-year-old married mother of three was alone in her affluent suburban Duxbury, Massachusetts home for less than an hour when the incident transpired, as explored in CBS’ ’48 Hours: Case by Case.’ She was left paralyzed from the waist down and is currently facing trial on 3 counts of first-degree murder, but her loving parents have since stood by her every step of the way.
Paula and Michael Musgrove Witnessed Lindsay Clancy’s Struggles in the Months Leading Up to the Incident
Connecticut natives Paula and Michael Musgrove welcomed Lindsay into their world as one of their two daughters on August 11, 1990. She thus grew up in a rather Catholic household in Wallingford, Connecticut, alongside a built-in best friend in Allison Ozga. However, not only did she share a close relationship with her sister, but she also had a tight-knit bond with both her parents, which persisted even after she grew up. Paula and Michael still remember her as the cheerleader who graduated from Lyman Hall High School in 2007 and continued the sport in college.
Lindsay earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Quinnipiac University in 2012 before relocating to Boston, Massachusetts, for nursing school. It was around that time, in the summer of 2013, that she first came across Patrick Clancy, just for them to soon fall head over heels in love. The couple tied the knot in December 2016, settled down in Duxbury, and then went on to have 3 adorable children, all the while building their careers. As per Paula, Lindsay was a Labor & Delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital by the time the early 2020s rolled around, but her pride and joy was motherhood.
“She was a very good kid and an excellent student,” Paula testified in court during Lindsay’s 2026 trial on 3 counts of first-degree murder. “She always wanted to be a mother — to have many children. I always felt it was the best thing that happened to her.” However, she added, things changed for the “loving mother” in the fall of 2022 as she started struggling with her mental health. Paula thus frequently traveled to Massachusetts to stay with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren in the months to follow. She claimed she was right there when Lindsay admitted that “she had thoughts of harming the children.” The family did everything in their power to help the young woman, and they seemed to hope for improvement by the time January 2023 rolled around, but then the incident happened.
Paula and Michael Musgrove Have Relocated to Better Support Their Daughter
Paula was with Lindsay just a few days before the killings and suicide attempt, and she had texted her daughter, “It’s nice to see you’re doing better,” upon returning home. She testified that she sent this message even though she was still concerned because she wanted to encourage her. “I didn’t think it did any good to discourage her,” she told the jury. “So the text was meant not necessarily what I observed that weekend, but it was meant to encourage her because I was encouraging her to do things with the kids to kind of try to get back to normal.” So, of course, neither she nor Michael ever expected to get the news of their grandkids’ death and her attempted suicide.
In the aftermath of the ordeal, Paula and Michael traveled to Massachusetts to support Lindsay as she dealt with the loss of her kids, her arrest, and her paralysis from the waist down. With everything going on, the couple ended up relocating there for good, so they remain there to this day. A friend of theirs has since established a GoFundMe page for them, stating, in part, “They have spent years absorbing the travel, lodging, and living costs required to remain close to their daughter, drawing down savings they spent a lifetime building.”
Therefore, the funds received from the page would go directly to Paula and Michael to help ease the “financial burden” they have carried just by “continuing to be present” for Lindsay. The page also notes, “Paula is retired. Mike is a photographer… They have not walked away from their daughter, and they have never been unclear about why: they love her. Nothing about this fund asks anyone to share their view of Lindsay or the criminal case… The purpose of this fund is to help Mike and Paula rebuild the financial stability they have sacrificed over these past three years.” As of writing, they have raised over $1.02 million out of their $2 million goal.
