The letter N has a special place reserved in the galaxy of motion pictures- ‘Nebraska’, ‘Nigtcrawler’, ‘Notorious’, ‘New York New York’ and the list goes on. ‘N’ has given us classics after classics throughout time and genre in films. Save this one for Valentine’s Day. Hugh Grant stars as William Thacker who lives a boring life in Notting Hill and works at a London Bookstore selling travel books. He helplessly falls in love with Anna Scott played by Julia Roberts and it turns out she loves him too. What comes next? Yes, you are probably right. Alcoholic and cranky old Woody Grant is all set to collect his prize money from Lincoln. His son, David joins him as they their journey to Lincoln from Nebraska. The film is one of the finest work by Alexander Payne which talks about aging, family and responsibilities. The dark humour in the movie is commendable and Bruce Dern’s performance sends shivers down the spine.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Louis Bloom, a denizen who lives on scavenging and thievery in Los Angeles. He finds himself in a new job as a camera-man who records footage of violent events late at night and sells it to a local television news station. He comes across a news director who aims to raise her station’s ratings. Louis crosses limits to reach her target.

This Nicolas Cage starrer does not miss a beat. Ben Gates has a thirst for treasure. The historian and code breaker is helped by his smart acquaintances Riley Poole and Abigail Chase in searching a treasure which dates back to the formation of the United States. 6. No Country for Old Man (2007)
Llewelyn Moss decides to rob the money from a drug dealer with an unfortunate fate. He axes his own leg when the hunter gets hunted by a deadly assassin named Chigurh who follows him. Tommy Lee Jones plays Sheriff Bell who is also in the lookout for Moss and has a dark past of his own. ‘Nikita’ has her life twisted when she takes over a new identity in order to avoid jail time for committing a crime. She is trained to be a secret police assassin under the hands of her government. Her brutal life is changed when she falls in love with a man who is unaware of her past. Although ‘Nikita’ received mixed reviews, it was nominated for a Golden Globe under the category for Best Foreign Language Film.
2. Notorious (1946)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this American spy noir film stars Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant and Claude Rains. ‘Notorious’ is about love, manipulation and betrayal as passion blossom in two men for one woman in the time of an espionage operation. The film is considered to be Hitchcock’s first attempt at a ‘thematically mature’ love story and has been preserved in the United States National Film Registry for its cultural, historical and aesthetical significance.

New York New York’ stars Robert De Niro as Jimmy Doyle and Liza Minnelli as Francine Evans. Need I say more? Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film pays tribute to the Jazz culture of New York. Here, Jimmy is an aspiring saxophonist and Francine is a pop singer. They perform together and madly fall in love.
