The Marco Petry directorial film ‘My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me’ (Originally titled ‘Mein Bester Freund, Seine Freundin und Ich’) is a German comedy film where two people fight for the affections of one. Olli and Matze have been best friends their entire lives. They work together, live in the same apartment, and plan to drop everything and take a year-long trip around the world together. However, a few weeks before this trip, Hatze meets Becky, who seems to be the girl of his dreams.

‘My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me’ is a comedy film that operates on a fictitious premise with no real-life inspiration behind it. As a light-hearted feel-good story, it relies on tried-and-tested tricks and tropes to create a familiar and relatable world. The central conflict in the tale stems from the rivalry between Olli and Becky, who are both competing for the spot of the most important person in Matze’s life. The former, who has been around since the two men were kids, feels he has a better understanding of Matze and his life. On the other hand, Becky, who strongly feels the real estate agent is “the one” for her, is hard-pressed not to end up as the third wheel in her own relationship. Consequently, an unofficial competition breaks out between the two, where they both try to assert dominance in their influence over Matze’s life.
This is a storytelling formula, involving three people with unique and clashing interpersonal dynamics, that audiences might find familiar. Other titles like the 2006 film ‘You, Me and Dupree,’ the 2016 film ‘Why Him?,’ and the 2001 film ‘Meet the Parents’ have previously employed a similar story structure. In fact, the latter has a more direct connection to ‘My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me,’ since the film’s German title ‘Meine Braut, ihr Vater und ich’ seems to be an influence on Marco Petry’s project. As a result, given the genre conventions prominent in the story’s premise, fans are bound to feel a sense of familiarity in the characters and their storylines. Nonetheless, the film itself remains a work of fiction, penned entirely by director Marco Petry and his co-writer, Janina Petry.
My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me Pitch Romance Against Bromance
The central themes of ‘My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me’ revolve around the natural conflict that brews between Olli and Becky, who both want to be a priority in Matze’s life. As a result, the dynamic between the two becomes reminiscent of the stereotypical perception of the differences between a platonic and a romantic relationship. Matze’s relationship with Becky is portrayed as a departure from the reckless, at times childish, freedom of bachelor life. Things like partying, drinking, hanging out with other guy friends, and more are treated like things that the protagonist is meant to grow out of now that he’s looking down the barrel of a serious relationship.
On the other hand, Matze’s friendship with Olli is presented as an immature reluctance to embrace adulthood. Thus, in defining the rivalry between the best friend and the girlfriend, the film relies on stereotypes and, at times, on dated comparisons between friendship and romance. As a result, the characterizations of Olli and Becky can often come across as one-dimensional and archetypal. However, the film intentionally uses these tropes and familiar characterizations to shape the story’s crucial humor into something conventional and ordinary that audiences will find easily relatable. Ultimately, ‘My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me’ finds its sense of realism in its characters and in the grounded, universal conflict between them.
