Created by Sascha Penn, Starz’s ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ expands on the world of ‘Power,’ taking us back to a time when towering characters like Kanan and Jukebox are still teenagers. From the very start, they learn that South Jamaica, Queens, can very easily become a dog-eat-dog world if one is not careful enough. Over the course of five seasons, though, Kanan goes from being the underdog to the master puppeteer of this criminal enterprise, and it is not without sacrifices. In the episodes leading up to the series finale, we lose Lou-Lou, Marvin, Snaps, and Pop, and in the final episode, Raq meets her end at the hands of a vengeful Jukebox, triggering a rivalry between her and Kanan that spans a decade. From the start, season 5 has been described as the final iteration of this show, but with one too many mysteries that remain unanswered, fans are curious about what is next for Kanan and company.
Power Book III Raising Kanan Was Always Meant to be a 5-Season Saga
With the season 5 finale, ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ brings together every piece of the puzzle that is Kanan’s psyche, explaining exactly how he becomes the ruthless kingpin we see in ‘Power.’ The story has officially run its course, and that is why there are no plans to renew it for a sixth season. From the very start, creator Sascha Penn envisioned ‘Raising Kanan’ as a five-season narrative, which is why every little structural decision feels so deliberate. By the time we reach the final stretch of episodes, every defining character action has its share of buildup, and we truly feel the weight of every death, every betrayal, and every reunion. Kanan is at his lowest point psychologically, and for a show driven by its sense of tragedy, there can be no more fitting an ending.
Following the conclusion of ‘Power’ with season 6, several spin-offs have been created and conceived as different “books” of this saga, be it ‘Ghost,’ ‘Raising Kanan,’ or ‘Force,’ all of which center around one iconic character, Ghost, Kanan, or Eagan. On the other hand, the next iteration of the series, titled ‘Power: Origins,’ is likely to bring all these characters under one frame, where they tussle for control over the narrative. As such, while Kanan’s solo show may have been wrapped up with a solid five-season run, there is still a lot to his story that we are yet to know. As is the case with ‘Power,’ we are sure to see many references to ‘Raising Kanan’ down the line, and that will only strengthen its legacy as a modern classic.
Power Book III Raising Kanan Season 6 Could Have Addressed the Breeze Question
Although ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ achieves its primary objective with five seasons, that is, detailing Kanan’s rise in the world of crime, there are still some tangents that don’t get concluded. Perhaps most notably, season 5 properly introduces us to Breeze, the local crime genius who is Kanan’s equal in all respects. For such an important character to be completely missing in ‘Power’ can only mean one thing: that he dies somewhere between the ending of ‘Raising Kanan’ and the beginning of its parent series. ‘Power: Origins’ is meant to fill in that timeline gap, but a potential sixth season of ‘Raising Kanan’ could have fulfilled that narrative goal as well, expanding on the theme of Kanan losing everyone he cares for, almost as if he’s cursed.
The final moments of the show also set up the rivalry between Kanan and Jukebox in full swing, but we still don’t know much about what they were up to in the middle years before the all-out war in ‘Power.’ We also know very little about where their stories go romantically, especially since Jukebox’s relationship with Iesha is one of the strongest dramatic aspects of the series. For Kanan, there is also the dynamic with Stefano, another character who doesn’t appear in the original series. Creator Sascha Penn has teased that the most “intense and action-packed” sections of the story are still left to tell, which means that fans of Kanan, Jukebox, Breeze, and others can expect them to reappear in future spin-off series.
