Created by Graham Yost, Apple TV’s science-fiction series ‘Silo’ tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world, where the remnants of humanity have seemingly been forced to take shelter in a massive underground silo. Over the course of three seasons, however, we learn that this is only half of the truth, as not only are there more silos than one expected, but many of them fell into ruin after their residents learned the truth about the world and were punished for it. In the previous episode, Juliette, having regained her memories, tries to trick the algorithm into sending people out of the silo. However, in doing so, she welcomes a chess game she might not be equipped to play just yet, and season 3 episode 7, titled ‘Radio,’ conveys just that. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Lucas and Kyle Step Out of Silo 18 And Are Met With Bad Luck
‘Silo’ season 3 episode 7 begins with Juliette calling in Lucas, Kyle, and Patrick Kennedy and briefing them about the mission at hand, only to be met with mixed reactions. While Lucas seems ready to do the mission all by himself, Juliette insists on a two-man team, dreading a scenario where one of them dies. Kennedy, however, is less than pleased about the idea of joining the mission, as his goal has always been to step out of the silo and never return. After agreeing to help Lucas for half the route, Kennedy joins him in gearing up that very night, much ahead of the time agreed to. Juliette believes that this can save the duo from any traps laid out by the algorithm, but she is soon, bitterly, proven wrong.
Upon exiting the silo, Lucas and Kennedy are met with nothing but a cold, barren wasteland, and begin their long walk towards Silo 18. With only a radio to communicate with Juliette and team, Lucas doesn’t get much of a chance to express himself when a whizzing sound surrounds him and Kennedy. Soon, that sound turns into one of bullets being fired, and just like that, the radio goes silent. As Juliette walks back upstairs in shock, the algorithm seemingly confirms that Lucas and Kyle are dead. Later, Camille joins the fray, confirming that the water supply has been filled with Vitamin D+, and it is only a matter of time before the entire population of Silo 18 forgets everything they have learned so far.
Gloria Hildebrandt Returns to Join the Fight
Leaving Juliette behind, the episode cuts back hundreds of years in the past, to Daniel and Helen being transported to yet another secret location. This time, though, they don’t have to wonder who is steering the wheels, as that mystery figure is confirmed to be none other than Senator Thurman. The old man who had been tailing Daniel and Helen all this time is also revealed to be Thurman’s main enforcer, who, while not exactly a part of the political system, has a considerable influence on it. Together, the entire crew, along with Charlotte and another mystery man, are escorted to a private jet headed for Georgia. The man is revealed to be a scientist who has secretly been working with Thurman on a mega project to supposedly “save the world.”
Back in the present, Juliette is confronted by a new reality, one where she is losing the battle. Without knowing the precise coordinates of the vents that can save the people of Silo 18 from certain death, she is left with no choice but to go for a more radical solution: blow up the entire Justice Department. It is, after all, the spot from where the killing gas can be activated, which makes destroying it the safest possible course of action for Juliette and company. However, greenlighting this risks killing hundreds of people, and Juliette struggles to make the choice. Bernard, however, has someone who can convince her, and it turns out to be none other than Gloria Hildebrandt, the fertility counselor whose memory was tampered with by the Judicial department.
Juliette and Company Nearly Blow Up the Judicial Department
Bernard reveals that he got Gloria off the medication sometime after the order to restrain her, and since then, Gloria has been one of his many secret allies. The real reason he brings her back into the picture, though, is because of a relic she managed to uncover, one detailing the diary entries of a man who is now long gone. Bernard reveals that this man was also a rebel and had plans to blow up parts of the silo to take down the Judicial department. However, following his capture and sedation using Vitamin D+, he left behind a series of entries slowly capturing his complete loss of cognition, in a way that only Juliette can truly relate to. This seems to do the trick, and she greenlights the bombing of Judicial at last.
What follows is among the most intense sequences in all of ‘Silo,’ as several rebels from Juliette’s crew dress up as workers from the mechanics and head towards the grand building. To make matters more complicated, Camille and Robert enter the building at the same time, leaving Juliette conflicted yet again. However, in a shocking turn of events, she gives the bombing a go-ahead, and it only comes to a stop when the radio accidentally captures a broadcast of the soldiers discussing that children are currently present inside Judicial.
Though the attack is called off, Camille and Robert’s private meeting quickly takes a turn for the unpredictable. Taking him inside the prison cell where nurse Amy is being held, Camille reveals that she knows Robert is working against her. With his cover almost completely blown, Robert no longer hides his contention about how their child should live in a world where memory is still preserved. As the argument unfolds, we return to the past, where the scientist boasts about having created a unicorn, not for any grander experiment, but just for personal curiosity. His latest project is far from that, though, as Daniel watches, from inside the plane, an enormous set of drills carving out what appears to be the very first silos, bringing us a step closer to the truth.
