Sega’s widely popular game franchise has finally received the big-screen treatment in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog.’ Although the project was initially met with immense backlash over the visuals, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ improved and delivered a gripping tale where Sonic goes up against Dr. Robotnik.
The hysterical doctor works with the government to capture this creature from the alternate dimension. However, Robotnik plans on using Sonic’s speed for world domination. Meanwhile, the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, teams up with Sonic to help him evade capture. The film’s final moments see an epic face-off between Sonic, and Robotnik, who game fans will recognize as one of the franchise’s most iconic villains.
However, the question in your mind must be whether there are post-credit scenes, and what it means for the future. We have got you covered in that regard.
Does Sonic the Hedgehog Have Mid and Post Credits Scenes?
Firstly, there are two mid-credits scenes but no actual post-credits scene. The first mid-credit scene shows Dr. Robotnik on the Mushroom Planet. We see the villainous doctor with a shaved head and a mustache, which makes him more visually similar to the Robotnik we know from the games. It seems that around 90 days have passed since Robotnik has been trapped on the planet, and he wants to return home by Christmas. The doctor also seems to have one of Sonic’s quills.
The second mid-credits scene shows that a ring portal is opening on earth, and Tails emerges. He says that he hopes it is not too late, and then flies off, using his twin-tails. Now, let us tell you what it means for the future of the franchise.
What Do the Mid-Credits Scenes Mean?
We already know that ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ was planned as the first movie in a franchise, so keeping Dr. Robtonik alive definitely means that we could see him in the next installment. Obviously, another film being made will depend on the collections of this movie, but Dr. Robotnik could be a recurring villain. However, we are unsure how he will make his way back to earth from the Mushroom planet. Since Jim Carrey, the actor who plays Robotnik, has expressed an interest in appearing in subsequent Sonic movies, we would not rule out Robotnik as a long-running villain.
Otherwise, we might see Robotnik using his evil plans to unleash other villainous forces on earth. After all, Sonic has a vast rogues’ gallery, which the franchise could benefit from.
Coming to Tails, fans of the franchise know that this two-tailed fox is Sonic’s best friend and sidekick. The appearance of Tails definitely indicates that the possibility of a sequel is very open, and the universe of Sonic will be expanded upon. That being said, there are several other instrumental characters in the Sonic universe, like Knuckles and Shadow. While we know that Tails will definitely be appearing in the sequel, since the character has been introduced, it remains to be seen if the likes of Knuckles and Shadow also get screen-time, or if they are left for later installments.
Thus, through the two mid-credits scenes, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ has taken some serious steps towards world-building. It has already let us know that the evil has not completely been vanquished and is planning a comeback. It has also helped in the expansion of the hero’s roster. Now, all that remains to be seen is if the sequel is greenlit and how Dr. Robotnik manages to make his way back to Earth from the Mushroom Planet, where Sonic puts him in the final sequence of the first film. Needless to say, the mid-credits scenes are worth staying back for and will leave you anticipating the sequel, already.
