The second season of Apple TV+’s ‘Sugar’ has PI John Sugar taking on a missing person’s case, which turns out to be much more dangerous than he’d imagined. He is tasked with finding Ji Moon, whose brother, Danny, is concerned that he may have gotten involved with some bad people. In the course of solving the case, Sugar also uncovers the mystery of those who exposed his people’s existence on Earth, forcing them to flee at the end of Season 1.
The answer is something Sugar had never expected, and it raises further questions that will need another season to answer. So far, Apple TV+ has not renewed the show for Season 3. Considering that the second season was renewed a couple of months after the Season 1 finale, a similar timeline is expected to confirm the show’s fate. Moreover, the sophomore season premiered two years after its predecessor. This means if ‘Sugar’ Season 3 is greenlit, it will likely air sometime in late 2028. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Sugar Season 3 Will Delve Deeper Into the Protagonist’s Alien Origins
Despite being a show about an alien on Earth, ‘Sugar’ grounds itself with deeply human themes. So far, most of the plot has been focused on John Sugar solving crimes, while his alien origins have remained a subplot. A similar approach is expected in the third season as well. At the end of Season 2, Sugar discovers that his missing sister, Djen, is behind the chaos that drove his friends to flee, leaving him stranded on Earth. She has invented a revolutionary technology that is more than it seems. Following this revelation, she leaves again, asking Sugar to find him when he is ready. The truth is too much for Sugar to process, so he decides to take some time to focus on himself.
He says he will keep solving crimes in the meantime, but this time, perhaps, he will shake things up a bit by solving something other than a missing person’s case. At the same time, Djen’s true plan will also unfold in the background. No matter how much Sugar wishes to distance himself from his sister’s schemes, he will eventually wind up getting entangled in them anyway. It remains to be seen if he will choose to fight with her or against her. This plot will also thicken with another mystery that will have Sugar’s attention. At the beginning of Season 2, when Henry dies, Sugar takes some of his stuff. One of those things is a device that sends and receives messages.
Sugar keeps sending out messages throughout the season, hoping that someone like him might have chosen to stay back and could still be out there. He receives no replies until the finale’s last scene, when we see the receiver’s light flickering. This means someone has finally reached out to him, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s another alien. The identity of this other person will also be a major plot point of the next season. Additionally, the show will continue to delve into Sugar’s complex emotions regarding his own identity, particularly as he fears assimilation.
Sugar Season 3 Will Introduce New Cast Members
With every season, ‘Sugar’ brings forth a new case, which means a new cast of characters is brought into the mix. The same is expected of the third season as well. John Sugar will have new clients, victims, and suspects, and that’s just the human characters. With the expanding alien arc, more otherworldly characters are also expected to enter the mix. At the same time, the show will also bring back some familiar characters, some of whom might take a more prominent role beside the main character. Colin Farrell will reprise the titular role, with Sasha Calle’s Val also expected to join him following their collaboration in Season 2. In the same vein, Shea Wigham’s Tom might also return as Sugar’s friend in the police force.
The protagonist’s ongoing struggles with identity suggest he might remain haunted by Laura San Giacomo’s Peg. Meanwhile, the subplot is expected to continue Djen’s storyline, bringing back Mirielle Enos and Laura Donnelly as Charlotte Fisher. Bernard White’s Dr. Stanley Ondaatje might also return to shed more light on Djen’s plans. Most importantly, Sugar’s dog, Wiley, has returned, which already makes Season 3 much better. While Jin Ha and Raymond Lee played an important role in Season 2, the Moon brothers’ case is closed, which means we will likely not see them again.
