Disney has unveiled a new trailer for its upcoming ‘Maleficent’ sequel ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,’ starring Angelina Jolie as the titular dark fairy. The movie is the second installment to Disney’s 2014 flick ‘Maleficent’ which featured Jolie along with Elle Fanning in the lead. Both the actresses reprise their respective roles as Maleficent and Princess Aurora in the sequel. Other cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville.
The trailer introduces Michelle Pfeiffer’s character of the Queen of an enemy state. Aurora, now the Queen, and Maleficent join forces to defend their kingdom from looming threat of a magical wilderness. The new trailer sheds light into the conflict of ideas between the two women which was implied in the first trailer.
Set the tunes of ‘Season of the Witch,’ the second trailer reveals details about an apparent collision between Maleficent and Aurora when the later’s restrained, diplomatic and political approach to deal with the looming threat doesn’t always go in lines with Maleficent’s more militant attitude towards the enemies.
Aurora seems to get ready to marry Prince Phillip as the nuptial diplomacy will cement the alliance between Ulstead and the Moors. But Maleficent doesn’t seem to embrace the idea of nuptial diplomacy. According to Disney, the plot centers on the split between Maleficent and Aurora who find themselves “on the opposing sides of a devastating war,” which puts their familial bonds into a test.
The 2014 film revealed the origin of the famous curse of Maleficent that fell on Princess Aurora when she was a baby. According to the curse, Aurora will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and slip into an eternal sleep at the age of 16. The only possible antidote is a true lovers’ kiss! ‘Maleficent,’ which was based on Charles Perrault’s popular fairy tale and Disney’s 1959 animated classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and directed by Robert Stromberg, went on to become a blockbuster, grossing over $750M globally.
Over the years, the relationship between Maleficent and Aurora has evolved through heartbreak, revenge and love. But the rivalry and distrust between humans and fairies still control the exchanges between them.
‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ is directed by Joachim Rønning from a script by Linda Woolverton, Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. Roth Films produced the film along with Walt Disney Pictures. ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ is set to hit theaters on October 18, 2019, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
