‘xxxHolic’ is more of a forgotten classic that is funny, dark and unique. It slowly grows on you with its two main characters, Doumeki and Watanuki, who are yin and yang. Their polar opposite personalities create a perfect love-hate comedy that lightens up the overall dark tone of the series. On the visual end, there is something very unusual about the character designs of the show.
Production I.G is known for creating some of the most visually stunning anime but the studio has never previously created such weird spaghetti-like people in any of its shows before. While some might find this animation style a bit off, others will be able to see how it perfectly fits in with its whole setup. For someone who is still new to the world of anime, ‘xxxHolic’ serves as the perfect gateway show. With that said, here is everything we know about its third season.
xxxHOLiC Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘xxxHolic’ season 1 premiered on April 7, 2006 and with a total of 24 episodes, it ended on September 29, 2006. This was then followed by the second season, titled ‘xxxHOLiC Kei’, which aired from April 4, 2008 to June 27, 2008. Following this, the anime also featured three sequel OVA seasons that started airing on February 17, 2009 and went on till June 23, 2009. When it comes to the third season of the anime, Production I.G has not made any official announcements yet and since it was last seen about a decade ago, it seems very less likely that it will return with a whole new season now.
Also, considering how Production I.G (‘Psycho-Pass‘, ‘Attack on Titan‘) has way too many upcoming projects under its belt, it is possible that the Studio will never consider going back to an anime that is more than a decade old. However, since it was extremely popular back in the day, it is possible that some other anime studio might consider renewing it or even creating a reboot out of it. Optimistically speaking, we can see ‘xxxHolic’ season 3 release sometime in 2022 or later.

xxxHOLiC Plot
‘xxxHolic’ centers on a teenager named Kimihiro Watanuki, who is troubled by monsters and spirits, and to his dismay, only he can see them. He somehow comes across a wish-granting shop one day. As soon as he enters it, he is greeted by a beautiful know-it-all witch named Yuko Ichihara. He begs that he wants to stop seeing all the monsters and spirits, but for obvious reasons, to get his wish granted, he must pay a price.
Realizing that the boy is a hard worker, Yuko makes a deal with him: he’ll have to do all her housework and other chores till he is able to make up for all the magical power that is required to help him get rid of his demons. With this, he sets off on a whole new adventure while working at a magical store that grants the wishes of anyone who walks in.
xxxHOLiC Characters
Kimihoro Watanuki
Kimihoro is the main character of the ‘xxxHolic’ series. He has short black hair, indigo eyes and is usually seen in his school uniform. He chooses to stay alone after his parents die, but more than that, what really bothers him is the fact that his everyday life is haunted by all kinds of weird supernatural beings. Depending on who he is talking to, Kimihoro’s personality changes drastically. He can either be very kind or he can be extremely hostile.
When it comes to Himawari, he really likes to spend time with her and even throws his hands up in celebration every time he meets her. On the other hand, every time he sees Doumeki, he can’t help but show how disgusted he feels. Initially in the show, he does a lot of childish unnecessary things and comes as a very immature character. However, as the show progresses further, he becomes more serious.
Yuko Ichihara
Yuko is a tall, thin, pale-looking woman who possesses the power of granting wishes. For the most part of the series, she seems to be more of a side character who just watches all the events unfold right before her eyes. But every time she gets involved, it’s her presence that governs the time and dynamics of the storyline. With Kimihiro, she always acts bossy and sarcastic but also deeply cares for him. She also loves alcohol and every time she gets a hangover, she asks Kimihiro to fetch her some medication from the drug store.
