Apple TV+’s ‘Ted Lasso‘ returns for a fourth season, with the titular character, once again, taking charge of a football team that has a lot of challenges to overcome. The new turn focuses on Ted taking on AFC Richmond’s first women’s team as head coach, a job that Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins flew to America to offer him. Back in London, the work begins, but before he can get to know the team, he has to know his assistant coach, Alice Chilton, who might not be as easy to win over. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Alice Chilton is the New Assistant Coach
Before Ted Lasso comes on as head coach, the women’s team has Alice Chilton. She joins the team as an assistant coach, believing she has a promising future with AFC Richmond. However, when she realizes that she, or any woman, was never considered to be the head coach, she decides to resign even before the work has properly begun. Rebecca is not too concerned with her leaving because it turns out that Chilton isn’t exactly popular with her employers. She is headstrong and has no time for nonsense. However, underneath that hard exterior is a person who deeply cares about her players and their success.
It is also revealed that Alice had once had a promising career as a football player. But she tore her ACL, which was compounded by further injuries, eventually leaving her entirely unable to play professionally. Because she has been through it all herself, she understands what her players might experience in such situations. Despite seeming strict and unwilling to make emotional connections, she is deeply invested in the physical and mental well-being of the women on her team. Ted recognizes this dedication in her early on and convinces her to change her mind about leaving and stay with the team.
Tanya Reynolds Balances Ted Lasso’s Energy as Alice Chilton
Tanya Reynolds plays the role of assistant coach, Alice Chilton, in the fourth season of ‘Ted Lasso.’ She is best-known for playing Lily Iglehart in Netflix’s ‘Sex Education.’ Hailing from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, the actress came from an entirely non-acting background. Her father was a builder, and her mother was a signwriter. She revealed that when she was around five or six years old, her mother pointed out that she was really good at acting, which led her to choose acting as her future. Over the years, this ambition only strengthened, as Reynolds states she never thought about doing anything else. She also credits her parents’ unconditional support as a huge encouragement.
After she graduated from university, she applied for drama school but wasn’t initially accepted. She refused to give up and auditioned again. This time, she was not only accepted but also received a full scholarship to the Oxford School of Drama. It was in drama school that she discovered her talent for comedy, citing a clowning class as the catalyst for the revelation. She finished her one-year training and graduated in 2015, landed her first professional acting job in 2016, and never looked back. Since then, she has appeared in Autumn de Wilde’s ‘Emma,’ Netflix’s ‘The Decameron,’ Sky Atlantic’s ‘The Baby,’ and BBC’s ‘The Other Bennet Sister.’
She has also established herself as a formidable actor on the stage. For her performance in ‘A Mirror,’ she received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She has also worked in the production of ‘The Seagull’ alongside Cate Blanchett and the play ‘1536,’ co-produced by Margot Robbie. Reynolds is also planning to expand her talents behind the camera. She has written a film, titled ‘Dog Person,’ which she is set to direct with stars like James Norton and Hugh Bonneville already attached to the project.
