‘To the Max’ charts a poignant story about a group of extreme sports athletes who come together to undertake fascinating feats and make lasting memories. In the Spanish film, Carlos, a climber and BASE jumper, is approached with an opportunity to scale Mount Nameless and execute a record-breaking jump with his friends. Yet, while his fellow adrenaline junkie adventureres, Armando, Chana, Dario, and Alvaro, are up for the challenge, the preparation to train for the jump and find the proper funding ends up taking the group years. In that stretch of time, the athletes continue pursuing other daunting endeavors. Tragically, many of these undertakings prove to be the last adventure for the majority of the group. The film is based on the real-life stories of BASE jumper Carlos Suárez and his friends. One of these friends was Álvaro Bultó, a celebrated TV host.
Álvaro Bultó Died as a Result of a Skydiving Accident
Born in 1962 in Barcelona, Spain, Álvaro Bultó always sported a fascination with thrilling sports and other such activities. His father, Paco Bultó, was the founder of the Montesa motorcycle factory, which allowed his son to develop a natural passion for the vehicles at an early age. Eventually, his interest in extreme sports branched past motocross as he developed other hobbies, including skydiving, jet skiing, surfing, sailing, and more. In fact, in the late 2000s, he was the two-time consecutive holder of the record for human free-fall flight at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s Las Canteras beach. Furthermore, he became one of the first Spaniards to fly over Antarctica. In 2012, he also employed the help of his wingsuit to climb the highest wall of the Arctic.
However, in 2013, one of Bultó’s adventurous undertakings developed in unexpectedly tragic ways. The BASE jumper, who was known for using wingsuits for his endeavors, was in Lauterbrunnen, the Swiss Alps, practicing wingfly. Reportedly, Armando del Rey accompanied the TV presenter on this trip and even joined him on the practice flights. Unfortunately, where the latter managed to emerge from these flights unscathed, things played out differently for his friend. On August 23, 2013, at the age of 51, Bultó died due to a skydiving incident. Other divers confirmed that the accident was caused by a delay in the parachute, which caused a crash into the rocky outcrop with heavy impact.
At the time of the accident, Bultó was a television presenter and hosted the Spanish program on the Discovery Max Channel called ‘Así se Hace on,’ which revolved around extreme sports. The same year as his fatal accident, he was also a part of the underwater reality sports competition show ‘Splash.’ In the aftermath of his death, the tragic loss was mourned by the BASE jumpers, colleagues, friends, family, and loved ones. In a statement put out by the Discovery Channel, the athlete was described as having “lost his life doing what he liked best.” In his death, Bultó is remembered for his unique zest for life, which allowed him to garner many achievements and accomplishments as an extreme sports athlete and leave his mark on the world.
