‘To the Max,’ also known as ‘La Fiera,’ is a Spanish film inspired by the real lives of real extreme sport athletes. The film focuses on a group of friends who famously climbed big mountains and jumped off of them, with parachutes and wingsuits employed for their landing. These BASE jumpers included Manolo Chana, Carlos Suárez, Darío Barrio, Álvaro Bultó, and Armando del Rey. Among these individuals, Barrio had another career, outside of the world of sports, as a professional celebrity chef. In the mid-2000s, he presented the series ‘Cuatro’s Todos Contra el Chef,’ also known as ‘Cuatro’s Everyone Against the Chef.’ Known for both his daredevil ventures and culinary prowess, Barrio frequently remained in the limelight. Unfortunately, the chef/extreme sports athlete passed away in the 2010s.
Darío Barrio Died in 2014 at an Event Commemorating a Friend’s Passing
Darío Barrio retained an appreciation for adventure and thrilling ventures from the start. In the mid-1990s, he met Armando del Rey, a fellow extreme sports athlete, while skydiving. Shortly after a friendship bloomed between the two, they crossed paths with Manolo Chana, Carlos Suárez, and Álvaro Bultó, and soon got involved in BASE jumping. The activity involves jumping off fixed points from high altitudes, mountains, buildings, etc, with a parachute for landing. Eventually, in a matter of years, the group included wingsuit flying, which involved skydiving while wearing a webbing-sleeved jumpsuit, into the mix. Thus, the group ventured into many adventures, becoming pioneers of a sort in the realm of BASE jumping as wingsuit pilots.
In 2010, the group lost Chana to a tragic accident involving a parachute failure. Three years later, in 2013, Bultó also met his demise in a skydiving accident in the Swiss Alps. These deaths had a notable impact on the surviving friend group. A year after the 2013 tragedy, Barrio participated in an event to celebrate his dear friend, Bultó’s life, and commemorate his passing. This event, for the International Air Festival, took place on June 6, 2014, at the Sierra Segura mountain range in Spain’s Jaen Province. As a part of the event, Barrio, along with his friend, del Rey, was meant to jump off a castle. Although the latter survived the jump, the celebrity chef met a different end.
Reports of the event suggest that Barrio’s crash was possibly a result of parachute or wingsuit malfunctions. In the aftermath, paramedics made attempts to revive the BASE jumper, unfortunately to no avail. Thus, the 42-year-old was declared dead as a result of a crash into the cliff. The organizers of the festival were deeply regretful of the circumstances that led to this tragedy. As a result, they suspended all skydiving events. Barrio’s death was mourned by his friends, family, and loved ones, including his two children, who continue to carry his legacy forward. Likewise, he continues to be missed by numerous fans all over the country and the world. Through ‘To the Max,’ del Ray, the last surviving member of the BASE jumpers’ friend group, shares the celebrity chef’s authentic story and keeps his memory alive.
