Andrew Lincoln’s ‘Walking Dead’ Movies to Get Theatrical Release

AMC has made it official that the rugged zombie hunter Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is returning for another round, but this time for the big-screen version of the horror franchise ‘The Walking Dead.’ In a surprise announcement at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, the network unveiled a cryptic video clip teasing Lincoln’s return. But the intriguing part of the 24-second teaser is the caption on the closing shot that reads “Rick Grimes Returns: Only in theaters.”

The short teaser also reveals a chopper that carries an apparently wounded Grimes flying off over tall buildings. In an official tweet, AMC also confirmed that the untitled ‘Walking Dead’ movies will be distributed by Universal Pictures. Other details such as cast and release date haven’t been revealed yet. Lincoln, who exited the cult AMC drama series of the same name during its ninth season, has been rumored to reprise his iconic character of the ex-sheriff Rick Grimes in three TV movies for AMC. The film project was first announced in 2018 while AMC originally planned to start rolling production in 2019. But the network was in a search for a financial partner to co-release the project which ends up with Universal Pictures.

‘The Walking Dead’ creator Robert Kirkman has previously inked a first-look deal with Universal to create movies. Meanwhile, a feature film adaptation of Kirkman’s cult comic book series ‘Invincible,’ to be directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is also in the pipeline.

The official trailer for the upcoming tenth season of the AMC series ‘The Walking Dead‘ was also revealed during the SDCC panel on Friday. The tightly packed first look gives out glimpses of a looming was of the Whisperers n the new season. The villainous Whisperers were first introduced on the TV series in the ninth season.

‘The Walking Dead’ series showrunner Angela Kang unveiled the trailer at the Comic-Con while executive producers Robert Kirkman, Dave Alpert, Gale Anne Hurd, and Greg Nicotero were also present. Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Danai Gurira, Ryan Hurst, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Avi Nash, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cailey Fleming also joined the panel to talk about the upcoming season, which debuts on October 6, 2019, on AMC.

On the other hand, according to a THR report, the upcoming movies will be released by Universal as AMC Studios Original Films. The ambitious project is part of the network’s expansion plans for ‘Walking Dead’ universe which already features three projects, ‘Fear the Walking Dead,’ ‘The Walking Dead‘ and an upcoming young adult series set for 2020.
