Disney+ Series ‘Love, Simon’ Casts Its Lead Actor

‘Love, Simon’, the upcoming Disney+ series that is based on the 2018 movie of the same name, has found its lead actor, Michael Cimino, who is known for ‘Annabelle Comes Home‘. While the series goes into production later this month, it does not have a release date yet. Notably, Disney+ is launching in November. So, the show will obviously premiere sometime later this year or early next year.

Cimino leads the cast as Victor, who is a new student at Creekwood High School. Ana Ortiz, of ‘Ugly Betty‘ fame, appears as Victor’s mother. Other cast members include James Martinez as Armando, Victor’s father, Isabella Ferreira as Pilar, Victor’s younger sister, Mateo Fernandez as Adrian, the youngest sibling in the family, Johnny Sequoyah as Mia, Victor’s friend, Bebe Wood as Lake, Victor’s classmate, George Sear as Benji, a classmate who is always confident and charming. Anthony Turpel appears as Felix, Victor’s new neighbor while Mason Gooding plays the role of Andrew, the basketball star of Creekwood. Nick Robinson, who plays the titular role in the movie, is on board as a producer and the narrator.

The plot of the series is set in the same world as the movie where we see Victor, who is on his own journey of discovery as he faces challenges at home, struggles with his sexuality and adjusting to life in a new city. Overwhelmed by all of the changes, he reaches out to Simon for help in navigating through school life. Notably, when ‘Love, Simon’ came out, the Fox 2000 movie became the first major studio project circling around gay romance targeted at teens.

Agnes Chu, the vice president of content at Disney+, said about the upcoming show, ” ‘Love, Simon’ is a powerful story embraced by critics and audiences alike for its universal messages of authenticity, love, and acceptance. We are honored to partner with the talented team at 20th Century Fox Television to bring this new chapter of a beloved story to Disney+, continuing the personal and uplifting narrative that captivated fans of the original film.”

Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who worked on the movie directed by Greg Berlanti, are returning to the series as showrunners. They are also producing the show. Brian Tanen, Adam Londy, Jason Ensler, Isaac Klausner, Marty Bowen, Adam Fishbach, Wyck Godfrey and Pouya Shahbazian are on board as the executive producers. Notably, Berlanti is not involved in the project as he has an exclusive deal at Warner Bros. TV.

Aptaker and Berger also spoke about the upcoming show, saying, “We could not be more excited to be making ‘Love, Simon’ for Disney+. Writing ‘Love, Simon’ was one of the most profound and enjoyable experiences of our careers to date and we are beyond thrilled that we get to revisit this world and tell the story of Victor, a brand-new Creekwood student, and his family and friends. We have a phenomenal group of writers with tremendously personal connections to the material crafting our episodes, and have assembled a dream team cast and crew to bring these stories to life, and cannot wait to share what we’re working on with the world.”
