Apple TV+’s ‘Sugar‘ follows the story of a private detective named John Sugar who is ready to do whatever it takes to help his clients and solve their cases. The second season focuses on his search for Ji Moon, the missing brother of young boxer Danny Moon. The case takes him to the corrupt and vile side of the law. At the same time, he tries to ascertain the identity of the person who exposed the true nature of his friends, forcing them to abandon Earth for good. This is intertwined with the search for his sister, Djen, whom he hasn’t seen in years. The Season 2 finale brings an answer to that in a shocking twist. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Sugar Finds His Long-Lost Sister in Season 2
The mystery of the missing Djen was first mentioned in ‘Sugar’ Season 1. When it was revealed that Sugar is an alien, it was also mentioned that his sister went missing around the time he arrived on Earth. At the end of Season 1, fellow alien Henry reveals he is behind Djen’s disappearance, prompting Sugar to stay on Earth to find his sister while the rest of the aliens leave. The second season continues his search, but he hits a dead end when Henry dies without giving him any hint of what might have happened to his sister. It isn’t until the Season 2 finale that we discover the true extent of the secret.
Djen was sent to the Earth long before Sugar, which allowed her to develop a love and understanding for the place. She was appalled by how humans were treating their home, and she refused to sit back and watch the devastation unfold. So, she developed a technology that could change things, but her fellow aliens did not agree with it. So, she conspired with Henry to go underground, then exposed the identity of her own people, which eventually forced them to leave the planet. All this time, she kept her location a secret from her own brother because she didn’t yet know if she could trust him to understand her actions and intentions.
This is why there is no trace of Djen for the majority of the first and second seasons, but that is going to change moving forward. The Season 2 finale brings Sugar face-to-face with her. She tells him exactly what has happened, though there are still plenty of secrets between them. Before leaving again, she also tells her brother that her plans are grander than they appear at first glance. This means she will have a bigger arc in the upcoming seasons, especially as Sugar tries to figure out whether his sister is a savior or a villain.
Mireille Enos Elevates the Mystery of Djen
Mireille Enos plays Djen in the second season of ‘Sugar.’ She is best known for the role of Sarah Linden in AMC’s crime drama series, ‘The Killing.’ She has also appeared in shows like ‘Big Love,’ ‘For All Mankind,’ ‘Task,’ ‘Hanna,’ and ‘Lucky Hank.’ She has also worked in films like ‘World War Z,’ ‘If I Stay,’ and ‘The Lie.’ Raised in Texas, she developed a love for cinema at an early age. Her mother was French and shared her love for movies with her children, leaving Enos to watch French movies from an early age. Her brother, who is eleven years older than her, was involved in his high school theatre, and watching him on the stage led her to imagine the same for herself.
When she was 14, she was enrolled in Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, which laid the foundation for her acting career. Later, she majored in theatre at Brigham Young University, which she credits with a vigorous and thorough education of the craft. In her third year of college, she decided to turn full-time towards acting. She bagged a role of Honey in the production of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,’ for which she received a Tony nomination. After working extensively in theatre, she turned to television with her twin sister-wives role in ‘Big Love,’ which eventually led to her breakout role of Sarah Linden, for which she received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations in 2011. Over the years, she has taken up a variety of roles and established herself as one of the most versatile actors of her time.
