While Australian heartthrob Harry Jowsey is no stranger to the world of reality television, Netflix’s ‘Let’s Marry Harry‘ underscores him and his quest for love in a different light. He was admittedly quite a “playboy” throughout his early to mid-20s, but his entire perspective changed after he lost his father because he realized he didn’t have anyone to share life with. The grief was the absolute “worst” as well as the “most powerful thing” he ever experienced, which ultimately culminated in him knowing he was ready to find his forever person.
Harry Jowsey Shared a Close Connection With His Late Father
Harry Jowsey was born on May 24, 1997, in Queensland, Australia, to Melanie and Paul Jowsey as the youngest of the family, so he remembers their tumultuous times well. According to his own accounts, he had a great time growing up by the beaches across the Land Down Under and New Zealand, learning to fish, surf, and catch pips alongside his father. However, over time, he also became aware of the fact that his parents had a highly volatile and tumultuous marriage, especially affected by his father’s severe alcoholism.
Harry once described his father as a “crazy, crazy alcoholic” on the ‘Almost Adulting’ podcast in 2021, following which he added, “regardless of anything, that’s my old man, and I still love him.” He later continued, “I think my dad’s got many really, really good characteristics. He’s again my biggest idol when it comes to business and his mind in that sense, and how hard he hustled to get to where he has.” While it’s unclear precisely what Paul Jowsey did in his career, since he preferred to lead a rather private life after his youngest became a worldwide sensation, we do know he was one of Harry’s inspirations.
Even after his parents separated while he was filming Netflix’s ‘Too Hot to Handle’ season 1, Harry couldn’t bring himself to pick a side or anything. Yet, he did understand that the divorce affected his mother’s mental health a lot, only for him to learn before his father’s passing that he did regret the way he treated her. As per the show, Paul wanted to make amends and express his remorse before he died, but it never panned out the way he expected, and that affected Harry a lot. Therefore, upon his passing, he realized that he never wanted to have such regret and that he should embrace love and find “the one.”
Paul Jowsey Chose to Die on His Own Terms in Late 2024
Paul Jowsey was reportedly living a good, stable life in New Zealand when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given months to live. Therefore, with a full understanding of what was happening and his choices, he chose to pursue a medically assisted death, which has been legal in Kiwiland since 2021. As per Harry’s account, his father wanted to pass away on his own terms and with dignity, so he moved forward with it once he received approval from the Ministry of Health. In the end, after a few months of quality time dedicated to just family, Paul Joswey died with the help of medical assistance in December 2024.
Harry announced the news of his father’s passing on Instagram with a series of family photos, alongside the caption, “I love you, Dad, I miss you. I’ll catch you on the other side ❤️✨🕊️.” It was later that he opened up about the same and shared details on his ‘Boyfriend Material’ podcast. He said, in part, “It might give someone maybe some food for thought or some peace of mind, or just something different to think about in their lives, because I didn’t know it was an option. But long story short, my dad passed from assisted dying… (It was) a beautifully weird and terrifying experience. My dad got to have everyone that loves him around him, everyone holding him (…) It was really special.”
Harry spent the last two months of Paul’s life right alongside him in New Zealand, making new memories, reminiscing about old times, and asking every possible question. His sisters were right by him, and the entire situation admittedly brought them closer than ever before, all the while making him realize he was rather lonely and ready to find “the one.” He once also told US Weekly, “Grief is the best reset. It’s obviously hard. It’s obviously the worst thing ever, and I never want anyone to have it. But if you take one thing out of it, it’s the best reset to become who you’re meant to be.” The loss and the pain have thus changed Harry’s perspective on life, and at the end of the day, he is simply trying his best to lead with love.
