Is Conquest Dead? Did Jeffrey Dean Morgan Leave Invincible?

The fourth season of Prime Video’s ‘Invincible’ brings Mark face-to-face with some of the most powerful enemies he has ever faced. One of them is Conquest, whom he fought in the Season 3 finale, and almost lost to if it weren’t for Eve. But even as he defeated the Viltrumite, he didn’t really finish the job, and that’s a mistake that comes back to bite him at the worst possible time in the worst possible manner. The fifth episode turns the focus towards the Viltrumite war as Mark joins Nolan and Allen, but even before they reach their destination to plan the next step with the Coalition of Planets, they are attacked by two Viltrumites, led by Conquest, who has come to finish the job, and then some. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Mark Gives His All to Kill Conquest

Conquest is one of the fiercest Viltrumites out there, and when Mark first came face-to-face with him, he almost lost. If it weren’t for Eve unleashing her power in an unprecedented manner, Mark would have died then. So this time, when Conquest shows up again, Mark knows that he has to kill the Viltrumite at any cost. If he didn’t have enough motivation to do that, he gets it when Conquest sets his eyes on Oliver. He knows that the younger Grayson is much weaker than his father and brother and an easy target. Mark, too, knows that once Conquest gets his hands on his brother, Oliver will not have a chance, no matter how much he tries to fight. Conquest plays with him, first talking about killing Oliver, and then about paying a visit to Eve and killing her as well.

His words flip a switch in Mark, and he attacks Conquest with the singular intention of ending his life. After a back and forth, he gets a grip on Conquest’s throat. By this time, Mark has tried absolutely everything to weaken the Viltrumite. But no matter how hard he hits him, Mark cannot get Conquest to back down or show even a hint of a chink upon his armor. So, he decides to choke the villain to death. But of course, it is not as easy to kill a Viltrumite. As Mark increases the force of his grip, Conquest tries to fight back. He tries to get Mark’s hands off of him. He punches at him, kicks him, and, eventually, punches a hole through Mark’s body, pulling his innards out. Even then, Mark does not let go of his grip.

Conquest’s Death Marks the Departure of Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Mark knows that if he lets go, he will lose his only chance to kill Conquest, whose next target is most likely Oliver, and then Eve, and then his mom, and then every other person on Planet Earth. This thought, of protecting the people he loves at any cost, is what keeps him unshakeable, even as his intestines are pulled out of his body. He keeps choking Conquest’s throat, and eventually, after all the damage he has inflicted on Mark, the villain finally succumbs. His eyes turn blue, with the life slipping out of them. It is when his hands fall to the ground, and he is not pulling out Mark’s intestines anymore, that it is confirmed that Conquest has breathed his last, and Mark’s job is finally done.

Despite all the challenges that Mark has faced so far, Conquest is the one who has been his biggest challenge. Earlier, Mark lost to his father, who almost beat him to death, and lost to another Viltrumite, who let him go simply because that’s not what she was sent there to do. But losing to Conquest was another thing entirely. He had no intention of showing mercy to Mark or anyone else, which is what made killing him even more important. With Conquest’s death, the war has officially begun, though this is just the beginning of all the horrors that await Mark and his friends. It also means we won’t be seeing this character again, as there are many more challenges waiting for the protagonist. This means that we will most likely not hear from Jeffrey Dean Morgan in ‘Invincible’ again.
