5. Shampoo (1975)

This satirical romantic comedy-drama stars amongst the secondary actors Carrie Fisher in her first ever film appearance at 18 years of age. Set during the 1968 election of Richard Nixon as the president of the United States, it revolves around George, a hairdresser successful in his work and in his sexual relationships. In the mids of infidelity and adultery, his dream to open his own shop leads him in an affair with wealthy married lover Felicia. Conflicts ensue when his sexual adventures begin to unveil his true nature.

Now that they’re finished with school, they face their last night of freedom before heading into a future that some may be confident about and others may be fearing.

3. Carnal Knowledge (1971)

“Carnal Knowledge” focuses on the sexual experiences, their outcomes and developments of two distinct characters played by Art Garfunkel and Jack Nicholson. The first is a gentle man who idolises women, while the other one, the complete opposite, objectifies them as tools of pleasure and only cares about the physical rather than the intellectual. Having met in college, we follow their love interests and adventures over the time frame of 20 years. Groundbreaking in its content, not everybody agreed with the open discussion on sexuality that this film brought. Funny fact : after having showed the film in a theatre in a small town of Georgia, the manager was arrested for “distributing obscene material”. Thankfully they soon canceled the conviction.

2. Easy Riders (1969)

Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper are two bikers traveling across the country, from Los Angeles to New Orleans, after having been heavily paid for a drug deal. “Easy Riders” is a film that portrays and is set in the counterculture of the 60’s, bringing to the screen new possibilities and discussions about topics on the rise. With the exploration of societal issues of the time and integrating the hippie movement which changed a nation, it opened up the gates to the New Hollywood filmmaking movement, together with other films such as “The Graduate”. Also, let’s mention this film brought Jack Nicholson his first Oscar and Golden Globe nomination, even if only for a small part.
