Based on a film by Hannah Fidell of the same name, ‘A Teacher’ is a drama television miniseries that follows Claire (Kate Mara), a young and popular English teacher at a Texas school, and her illicit relationship with her 18-year-old student. The series looks at the complexities and the inevitable consequences that they both must face due to their relationship. An off-limits relationship never fails to catch people’s attention because it is unexpected.
Even if the chemistry is evident, the “will they, won’t they” element keeps everyone at the edge of their seat. But if and when it finally takes shape, the climax is bound to be explosive. However, this show features in the list because of one particular relationship that catches our eye – Ezra (Ian Harding) and Ari (Lucy Hale). The two hit it off when they meet at a bar, not knowing then that Ezra would be teaching in the same school that Aria goes to. They have to keep their relationship under wraps, but things get complicated for them anyway. But does it destroy lives? You will have to watch to find out.
4. Riverdale (2017-present)
‘Riverdale’ is a teen drama that lends a dark twist to the characters from Archie Comics. There is much more to the small town of Riverdale than it lets on. The first episode reveals the forbidden affair between Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and his music teacher, Miss Grundy (Sarah Habel). The series creates a similar atmosphere of tension and mystery as that of ‘A Teacher.’ Miss Grundy and Claire have one thing in common – both try to escape the reality of their love life.
3. Ray Donovan (2013-2020)
‘Ray Donovan‘ is a crime drama series that broke the viewership records, becoming the biggest premiere in Showtime’s history. Set in Los Angeles, the show follows Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber), a crime fixer/cleaner who works for a powerful law firm. But things go awry when he finds out about his daughter, Bridget’s (Kerris Dorsey), relationship with her teacher Mr. Donellen (Aaron Staton). What could be worse than an illegal affair which also involves casual drug use? The wrath of Ray Donovan.
2. Friends (1994-2004)
There is no way you have not seen this American sitcom, which is considered to be one of the most popular series ever made. However, you may remember that ‘Friends’ has its fair share of off-limits relationships, with many of them involving Monica. Monica has a serious relationship with Richard Burke, her father’s friend, and later even dates his son, very briefly. When Monica and Chandler first get together, it is considered off-limits too.
While talking about inappropriate relationships, two student-teacher relationships come to mind – one being of Ross and Elizabeth, his student at New York University. The most bizarre relationship that we see is between Phoebe’s younger half-brother, Frank, and his teacher, Mrs. Alice. However, they are both very sincere about their feelings towards each other, which helps them get through the most challenging times.
1. Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)
‘Gilmore Girls’ is an American comedy-drama series that follows the life of mother-daughter duo – Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. The series has been praised for its mix of humor and drama, witty dialogues, and cross-generational appeal. Hold on to “cross-generational” since that is what describes Paris’ (Rory’s best friend) relationship with her literature professor, Asher Fleming.
Fleming is introduced as Rory’s grandfather’s friend, and interestingly, Paris is not the first student he dates. “Cross-generational” also takes on a whole new meaning for this relationship since Paris even gets involved in the lives of Fleming’s children, some of whom are older than her.
