Created by Graham Yost, Apple TV’s science-fiction series ‘Silo’ crosses the halfway mark of season 4 by returning all, or rather, most of Juliette’s memories to her. However, remembering how to save Silo 18 is only half the job, and to make it happen in reality, she has to come up with a new plan, one wherein she can outsmart the all-knowing algorithm before being played first. Meanwhile, Daniel and Helen’s car seems to be taking them towards their doom, but as we see over the course of this episode, aptly titled ‘The Drive,’ reality can be far more unpredictable than even the most out-there guesses. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Juliette Comes Up With a Plan to Return to Silo 17
‘Silo’ season 3 episode 6, titled ‘The Drive,’ begins with Camille descending into the lower levels with a rather suspicious gaze, as in front of her stands Robert, making his way up without Juliette in sight. Having trusted her husband to find, and ideally even kill the mayor, Camille begins to wonder if she is being manipulated, but to make sure of that, she decides to participate in the hunt herself. One of her spies alerts her to Martha Walker’s house just as we see Knox, Shirley, and the Outsiders all gather in there. The next arrival is that of an ailing Bernard, who is pleasantly surprised to reunite with Lucas Kyle under very different circumstances. The biggest entry, though, is that of Juliette, as she proclaims that she remembers everything, even the way to save this silo from imminent doom.
While it is true that Silo 18 can be filled with poisonous gas at any given moment, Juliette notes that one vent within the Justice Department’s headquarters connects to a different air system, and controlling it will likely be the key to making it out alive. The problem, though, is that Juliette simply cannot recall the exact coordinates of that mystery pipe. All she has are fragmentary memories of Solo’s maps, and while they are probably still out there in Silo 17, accessing them can be extremely hard. However, Knox suggests that they can simply go to Silo 17 and find the correct vents themselves, as at the end of the day, all silos share the exact same design. As Camille’s forces arrive at their doorsteps, Juliette decides to turn herself in to protect the others, but not without a plan.
Juliette Makes a Deal With the Algorithm
Upon reuniting with Camille, Juliette makes it very clear that she remembers everything, and in order to keep shut about everything, for now, her first demand is a conversation with the algorithm. The story she chooses to go with is that of there being child survivors inside Silo 17, who cannot hold on for long due to rising water levels. This blend of fact and fiction seemingly works its magic on the algorithm, but it forbids Juliette from leaving the silo herself, forcing her to pick two volunteers instead. Meanwhile, Sheriff Paul Billings tightens up his investigation into Orla Kent’s death, but soon realizes that the faster way to solve the case is to find out who’s been stealing crucial supplies. Knox’s name emerges among the suspects, and it is only then that one of the smelters reveals that Knox’s father was famously a black market smuggler.
Meanwhile, hundreds of years in the past, Daniel and Helen’s fate seems to quite literally be in someone else’s hands, as evidenced by their car’s auto-driving to an increasingly secluded location. As it becomes evident that this is not a glitch but a hacking attempt, Daniel tries moving around some of the wiring to force the car to hit the brakes, but ends up cutting himself. With no one to help and their cellphones not functioning, Helen decides that the best course of action is to sit in the back and hope for someone to notice a driverless car and call the police.
In the meantime, they have an honest conversation. Helen reveals that she was fired from her old, prestigious job after one of her sources, who worked in the Senate, almost got their identity leaked, and to cover that up, Helen had to lie about making up information. Charlotte was also a source of hers, which makes all of this a lot more personal. One detail that gets casually introduced in this sequence, though, is that Helen is the original owner of the duck PEZ dispenser that Juliette currently possesses, marking our first, explicit tie-in between the two timeframes.
The Truth About the US Government is Revealed
In the present, things seem to be getting heated up within the Sims household, as Robert and Camille disagree about the correct strategy going forward. On many levels, this is about their son, and whether he will be one of those whose memory is about to get wiped out. As Camille vents these frustrations to the algorithm, she also adds how little she trusts Juliette, who is almost certainly scheming. Meanwhile, Juliette decides that Knox and Shirley are the most suited for this out-and-back mission, and while they realize that there is a risk of never coming back home, it doesn’t matter as much in the grand scheme of things. However, the algorithm rejects Juliette’s plea just as quickly, citing the duo’s importance to maintaining peace in Silo 18.
Distraught, Juliette realizes that her only trump cards in this situation are Lucas Kyle and Patrick Kennedy, two people who the algorithm wants out of this silo anyway. It agrees to this deal within seconds, but only reveals its true plans to Camille after Juliette is gone. Lucas and Kennedy are to be killed before they even set foot out, and more importantly, the Vitamin D+ supply is to be started right now. Smugly, Camille reveals that the supply started hours ago, which means that Juliette and company are really on the clock here. Meanwhile, we go back to Daniel and Helen, where the police surround their car at last, but the duo soon realizes that they are not here to stop the car, but to accompany it, as a convoy. Before long, the car stops at a warehouse, where a number of influential people seem to have gathered, including Paula Thurman, who welcomes our duo to save the world, be that a lie or the truth.
