Does Jasper the Dog Die in The Dog Stars?

Helmed by Ridley Scott, ‘The Dog Stars’ is set in a post-apocalyptic world where survival depends as much on the relationships people form as it does on the resources they manage to preserve. At the center of this fragile existence is Hig, a former mechanic and civilian pilot who finds some measure of comfort in his bond with his pet dog, Jasper, even as the world around them becomes increasingly hostile. Their relationship gives Hig a sense of familiarity in a life otherwise defined by loss, isolation, and bloodshed. However, a big part of survival is taking risks and stepping out into unfamiliar territories, both physical and psychological, which is where Jasper and Hig’s relationship is truly challenged.

Jasper the Dog Breathes His Last While Bravely Fighting Off Scavengers

Hig’s beloved pet dog, Jasper, dies in one of the most chilling sequences of ‘The Dog Stars,’ after being stabbed by one of the violent scavengers. After the entire first stretch of the film establishes Jasper as a main character, and his dynamic with Hig as the heart of the story, this comes as a complete shock, but also makes sense in-universe. With resources running thin and people getting incredibly on edge, this is, as one might put it, a dog-eat-dog world. While Hig and Bangley’s routine of taking turns watching the camp seems to work perfectly at first, the cracks begin to appear shortly after Hig gets obsessed with the radio signals coming from Grand Junction. This, in turn, causes him to get distracted and make the blunder of falling asleep while on guard, and by the time he wakes up, it is too late.

Though we don’t know how Jasper’s last moments alive exactly panned out, it is more than evident that he went down fighting to his last breath. Even when we don’t see much of him during the main fight, his sounds of biting the attackers constantly ring in the background, giving us a sense of assurance. However, somewhere along the din of the action, that sound gets lost, and Hig similarly loses track of his pet. With this, the story loses arguably its most endearing character, and it almost feels as if some warmth and color are drained from the screen. Not just that, but Hig’s story undergoes a major shift as well, all coming back to the death of his best friend.

Jasper Dies Due to Old Age in the Original Novel

The fact that Jasper meets his end while trying to fight off the scavengers is entirely because of Hig’s momentary slip-up, which is something that never leaves his mind from this point onwards. A brief flashback sequence reveals that Hig first adopted Jasper when he was just a baby, back when Hig’s wife was alive, and there was no civilization-decimating flu in sight. Naturally then, Hig thinks of his pet dog as his last tether to a happier world, and with him gone, nothing but darkness awaits ahead. In memory of Jasper, Hig buries him right next to his late wife, showing just how important this relationship was in keeping him stable. It is hardly a surprise that this is followed by Hig deciding to just fly away in unsafe conditions, almost as if punishing himself for his original carelessness.

Interestingly, in the book by Peter Heller that the film is based on, Jasper doesn’t die due to his injuries, but rather due to old age. Given the whole timeline starting with the dog’s birth, all the way up to the present post-apocalypse, it makes sense for the years to catch up to him. The scene of his passing is just as emotionally relevant in the book, though it fulfills a different narrative purpose. In the film, Hig has to begin a long arc of self-forgiveness, where he comes to not just cherish the memory of Jasper, but also learn from him about how to forge friendships that last a lifetime.
