Netflix’s ‘How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’ follows the story of a boy named Moritz who decides to start a website for selling drugs in order to win back his ex-girlfriend. His life takes a turn when the business starts to do well and, with the help of some connections, Moritz gets a strong foothold in the drug industry. While he enjoys being good at something and the huge sum of money that comes with it, he has to confront the dangers that his new situation poses. This keeps him on edge all the time, and keeps the tension up in the story for the audience. 5. The End of The F***ing World (2017-2019)
‘How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’ deals with the serious issue of teenagers falling in the habit of drugs as well as in the business of drug dealing. It focuses on some important matters regarding young adults, but presents them with such humour that it becomes impossible to not laugh at the tragedy that the protagonist’s life has become. It begins with a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that promises a lot of things to its participants, but ends up being something else entirely by the time they are done with it. Something similar appears in the career of Moritz as the CEO of MyDrugs. He believes that being an online drug lord, in collaboration with other drug dealers, wouldn’t be such a bad thing. But, that’s now how it turns out to be. ‘Maniac’ is also peculiar in its humour and balances the dark and deep subject matter with a sense of levity.
3. Ozark (2017- present)
Moritz Zimmermann’s life changes when he discovers that he is good at selling drugs online. When he becomes the CEO of MyDrugs, he finds a purpose for himself and becomes so engrossed in the work that he doesn’t want to leave it anymore, not until he realises how much danger he has put himself and his friends in. Something similar happens in the story of Marty and Wendy Byrde. Marty started laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel and was in it just for the money. He never expected to fall in trouble, but when he did, he fell in so deep that any way out of it became impossible for him. The show plays deftly with the shifting moods of its characters, especially the part where they begin to enjoy their job, only to later realise how much they have messed their lives, as well as that of their kids.
2. Narcos (2015- present)
If ‘How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’ intrigued you about the business of drug dealing and you want to get to know more about it, though still from the lens of dramatisation, then you should watch ‘Narcos’. Based on the real stories of real-life drug lords, the series follows the rise and fall of their empires. It begins with a high school chemistry teacher who decides to start making and selling meth in order to make enough money to not just pay for his cancer treatment, but also to leave behind for his family in the event of his death. Much like Moritz, Mr White starts with a mark that he has to hit, but soon enough, his talent at the job and the incredible sense of power that comes with it turns him to a different path.
