Walt Disney Animation Studios has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the long-awaited animated sequel ‘Frozen 2.’ The first look celebrates the magical world of the franchise with tropes like an underwater ice-crystal horse, a rock that transforms into a troll and the magnificent giants. The trailer opens up with Elsa running towards a dark and stormy sea. She suddenly transforms it into an icy lake which crumbles around her. Then, a scary voiceover stars playing over the visual in the voice of the troll, Pabbie (Ciarán Hinds).
“Elsa, the past is not what it really seems — you must find the truth,” says Pabbie. “We have always feared Elsa’s powers were too much for this world. Now we must hope they are enough.”
Elsa (Idina Menzel) marks her return along with her loyal sister and best friend, Anna (Kristen Bell) in the upcoming movie, which is a sequel to 2013 blockbuster ‘Frozen.’ Their buddies Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf the snowman (Josh Gad) and Sven the reindeer also come back for the next round of adventure.
The trailer hints that the sequel will reveal the origin story of Princess Elsa’s mysterious magical powers. According to the official synopsis, Elsa sets out a dangerous adventure with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven in to find the secrets in the first movie. Unlike ‘Frozen,’ in which Elsa worried that her powers were harmful to the world, she comes to terms with her magical powers in the upcoming sequel. There are cryptic symbols on the snowflakes and glimpses of the mysterious land beyond Arendelle the backdrop of the trailer.
Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell’s return as Elsa and Anna respectively is the main feat of the first look. Santino Fontana also reprises his role as the villainous Hans in the sequel. Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown join the cast as new members playing undisclosed roles. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck are back as directors along with producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.
“The big thing for us — and I’m being careful because I can’t give away anything. I’ll get in so much trouble. I think the big thing for me is; we weren’t going to do a sequel,” Lee told reporters in May. “Chris and I were like, ‘That story’s done.’ But then one day we just made the mistake of talking about something and going, ‘Oh my gosh. That’s the thing we still haven’t explored, and it’s important.’ Then I spent time writing these journals as the girls. I didn’t do it from exactly [copying the original] because I can’t. And if we tried to do it that way, I think we would have something very hollow.”
