Where Was Umthetho Filmed?

Adapted from the popular Brazilian show ‘Brotherhood,’ Netflix’s ‘Umthetho’ is a South African crime thriller drama series directed by Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano, and Jonathan “Jono” Hall. It follows a young, just, and idealistic public prosecutor named Mbali fighting crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice in the city. Things get personal and complicated for her when she is told that Moses, the older brother she believed to be dead, is alive and in charge of a deadly prison syndicate.

When her younger brother, Sphelele, gets entangled in a life-threatening situation, Mbali joins Moses’ prison gang as a double agent to get Sphelele out of trouble. Now, she finds herself caught between choosing her legal duty as a public servant and her family. The tale of crime and justice, interwoven with familial complications, unfolds in modern South Africa, primarily in a prison where Moses is held, allowing viewers to see the gravity of his crimes and how the public prosecutor deals with them.

Umthetho Filming Locations

Production on ‘Umthetho’ was reportedly conducted entirely in South Africa, especially in and around Johannesburg. From what we can tell, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the thriller show seemingly took place sometime in 2025, for about a couple of months or so. One of the directors, Mandla N, shared his experience of being a part of the project. He elaborated, “I really hope you enjoy watching it half as much as we enjoyed making it because trust me, there were long days, sleepless nights, and enough coffee to keep a small country awake! To our incredible cast and crew, thank you for your talent, dedication, patience, and for somehow managing to smile through the madness. Projects like this don’t happen by magic; they happen because of people who give their all. I appreciate every single one of you.”

Johannesburg, South Africa

The production team of ‘Umthetho’ visited several spots in Johannesburg, South Africa, to create the visual canvas of Mbali Dlamini’s world as the determined state prosecutor is drawn into the web of crime involving the brother she believed she had lost years ago. The city’s diverse urban landscape, world-class film infrastructure, lucrative tax incentives, and skilled technicians made it an ideal backdrop for painting the aesthetic of a family drama fueled by the collision of power, secrets, and moral uncertainty.

Since the lethal crime syndicate operates within the correctional institution in the narrative, the team likely shot a portion in a prison facility that allows its premises to be used for film and TV production. The establishing shots in the show feature Hillbrow Tower, the iconic 269-meter (883 ft) telecommunications landmark at 35 Goldreich Street in the Hillbrow neighborhood in downtown Johannesburg. A residential neighborhood in the region hosted the shooting of sequences that contrast the calm and order of a suburban area with the chaos of a prison complex.
