Are Sylvie and Loki in Love? Will They End up Together?

‘Loki’ has been reinventing not just the God of Mischief but also the ‘MCU‘ as a whole. The superhero series created by Michael Waldron follows an alternate version of Loki known as a variant, who finds himself trapped in a wicked game of lies and deception perpetrated by the Time Variance Authority (TVA).

The series has set the titular character on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery, the focus of which remains the character’s loneliness. However, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) finds unexpected companionship in the form of a gender-bent variant of his, who prefers to call herself Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino). As the two face an unprecedented situation, we decided to take a look at the newest ‘MCU’ fanship and whether Sylvie and Loki have a future together. Let’s dig in!

Are Sylvie and Loki in Love?

In the third episode of the show, Loki and Sylvie find themselves on a doomed planet called Lamentis-I. As the planet is facing an apocalyptic fate, the two variants, initially untrusting of each other, learn to work together. Over the episode, they discuss their sad love lives, and it is revealed that Loki is bisexual. Their conversations also hint that both characters are inherently lonely.

In the following episode titled ‘The Nexus Event,’ Loki and Sylvie’s attempts to escape the planet have failed. As they prepare to accept their fate, Sylvie opens up about her past to Loki. However, the TVA arrives, and they are both apprehended. In the TVA’s custody and after escaping from it, both characters show a sense of affection for each other. Loki, who is forced to confront his feelings of loneliness through a mindscape prison, finally prepares to confess his feelings to Sylvie. However, in the episode’s closing moments, Loki is pruned before he can say those words.

While it is unclear whether Loki’s feelings for Sylvie are reciprocated, there is a huge clue within the episode. The TVA was able to track the two on Lamentis-I because their bond managed to trigger a “Nexus Event.” We imagine this is only possible because both feel the same way about each other. Therefore, it is safe to assume that there is a romantic angle between Loki and Sylvie.

Will Sylvie and Loki End up Together?

The sheer thought of a relationship between two versions of the same person is unfathomable. However, Loki and Sylvie are entirely different personalities. They share some attributes, such as their tragic childhoods but have nearly opposite views on almost everything. Their relationship can be looked at as a form of self-love. Loki’s narcissism is merely a coping mechanism for his loneliness, and Sylvie to the mix provides the character to be vulnerable.

“That was one of the cruxes of my pitch (for the series), that there was going to be a love story. We went back and forth for a little bit about, like do we really want to have this guy fall in love with another version of himself? Is that too crazy? But in a series that, to me, is ultimately about self-love, self-reflection, and forgiving yourself, it just felt right that that would be Loki’s first real love story,” head writer/ creator Michael Waldron said, speaking to Marvel’s website.

“Who’s a better match for Loki than himself? The whole show is about identity,” added director Kate Herron. Those insights certainly help to cement the romantic nature of the bond between Loki and Sylvie. However, the biggest hurdle the budding romance faces is the very nature of their relationship. Such a relationship is potentially cataclysmic and reality-breaking, as Mobius himself tells Loki in episode 4. A Nexus Event is supposed to have dire consequences on the sacred timeline as per the TVA. However, TVA has been lying about a lot of things, and this could also be untrue.

While fans are loving the dynamic between Loki and Sylvie, their immediate and long-term future is currently in flux. Although Loki didn’t die after pruning, he is teleported away from the TVA. On the other hand, Sylvie seems more determined to get to the truth about TVA’s creation. Therefore, romance might not be her immediate concern. Given Loki’s history of tragic losses (literally and figuratively), the series might be setting him up for another devastating heartbreak. After all, some characters are only meant to help character development. Personally, we’d love to see Loki and Sylvie end up together and receive the happiness they deserve.
