Created by a dream team of Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, David West Read, and Lee Eisenberg, Apple TV’s ‘Brothers‘ finds a fine balance between metareferential humor and a rather dramatic story about what it means to be family, by blood or otherwise. While the origins of the show may be rooted in a popular rumor/theory, the comedy series finds its own voice over the course of eight episodes, giving us a view into Matthew and Woody’s fictionalized lives in increasingly novel ways. However, with the confirmation that the two are, in fact, brothers by blood, the season 1 finale takes on an interesting shade, ending with the two reconciling even as Matthew loses the governor’s election in a comical fashion. While the creators have not greenlit the show for a sequel, there is certainly a buzz among fans, and in the best-case scenario, they might be graced with a second season as early as 2028.
Brothers Season 2 Might Center Around Woody and Matthew’s (Biological) Father
Although Apple TV has not renewed ‘Brothers’ for a second season, its final scene does open the door to a potential continuation storyline. Having embraced the fact that they are brothers, both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson determine that the next logical step is to have a chat with their biological father, Clive V. Harrelson. While Woody’s real-life father, Charles Harrelson, may have died in 2007, the show’s fictionalized insert is very much alive and presently behind bars, likely still clueless about Matthew being his son. That isn’t the only bit of setup in the finale either, as while heading to the Colorado Penitentiary, Woody also brings up the possibility that there might be more siblings they don’t know about, and this can very easily be the plot for a sequel.

Upon hearing of the possibility of having even more unknown siblings, Matthew makes a rather meta joke about how he isn’t ready for sequels yet, which isn’t that far from his real-life opinion on a sequel. In a conversation with USA Today, he exclaimed that “talking about Season 2 is kind of like writing your acceptance speech before you’ve won the award,” which indicates that the creative team will take viewership and fan engagement into account. Luckily, Apple TV is known for having one of the strongest renewal track records in the industry, and with all the love and attention that the show has been getting from viewers worldwide, the possibility is definitely there. Even without a sequel, though, the story ends on a strong, relatively satisfactory note, having resolved its core premise already.
Brothers Season 2 Should Bring Most of its Ensemble Back
Given its lighthearted nature and comedic beats, ‘Brothers’ isn’t exactly a show where one expects massive shakeups to the cast. With the story being built around Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, those are two names one can most certainly expect to come back if the show is greenlit for a second run. Alongside those two, most of the actors essaying the Harrelsons and the McConaugheys are likely to return, with Natalie Martinez and Brittany Ishibashi as Valentina and Joy, respectively. Actors Holland Taylor, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, and Noah Carganilla also have a strong chance of stepping back into the roles of Ma Mac, Wyatt, Clara, and River, respectively.

On the Harrelson side of things, fans can expect actors Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe to return as Olive and Kai, rounding up the overarching family saga. However, one new casting that the audience should look out for is that of Clive V. Harrelson, who might appear as a major figure if the story continues. At the same time, one of the most charming presences in the show, Gwen Hillcrest Barnes-Davies, bows out in the season finale, which means that actor Lisa Gilroy will most likely not be returning for the show. Whether actors Jeff Kober and Barry Corbin return as the infamous Travis brothers also ultimately depends on where the narrative is headed.
Brothers Season 2 Can Expand its Focus Beyond Matthew and Woody
While the narrative focus of the first season may be the burning question of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey’s parentage, it also introduces us to a much larger, richly detailed world. The semi-fictionalized depictions of the two actors’ stardom and internal family dynamics leave us with some interesting plotlines that can be taken up. For instance, the Travis brothers are most certainly still in the game, despite being attacked by Matthew in broad daylight the last time we see them. Given that the story is seemingly headed towards Clive Harrelson becoming a fully fledged character, ‘Brothers’ might even take us back in time a bit to add to this invented backstory, in turn opening up new plot threads along the way.

A potential sequel can also dedicate itself more fully to the arcs of the supporting characters, especially those that don’t get a lot of focus. At the top of this list is, of course, the love story of Olive and Jimmy, which makes for some major turning points in the narrative, and yet isn’t shown a whole lot. By the end of the season, the duo seems to have gotten back together, which can make for many interesting plotlines, depending on where the writing team wants this to go. The same holds true for Kai and Wyatt, two socially awkward teenagers who come to realize just how powerful they are together. With the governor arc officially over, we might see both families get in on a lot of shenanigans, which is what makes this show click in the first place.
