Is Angel Batista Dead? Did David Zayas Leave Dexter Resurrection?

Angel Batista is one of the longest-running characters in the ‘Dexter’ franchise, appearing across the numerous seasons of the original show as well as its various spin-offs. After years of camaraderie with the titular character, the Miami Metro PD officer finally begins to suspect his friend of potentially hiding years of homicidal history. Towards the end of the season, the former cop gets confirmation of the same. Unfortunately, shortly after this discovery, he ends up becoming a target for Leon Prater, a billionaire venture capitalist who has a secret admiration for serial killers. This leads to a violent confrontation between Batista and Dexter that quickly turns bloody. Still, despite the ex-police officer’s ultimate demise in the finale, he seems to have somehow still returned in the season 2 premiere. Thus, the real fate of the character is bound to be a point of intrigue among the audience. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Angel Batista Dies at the End of Dexter: Resurrection Season 1

Angel Batista’s death in season 1 of ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ proves to be definitive for the character. The former police officer meets his demise after being kidnapped by Prater, who wants to use him as a pawn in an overarching game of chess against Dexter. The billionaire straps Batista to a kill table, intending for him to be the next victim of the serial killer once known as the Bay Harbor Butcher. In order to provide an incentive, he even offers to become the killer’s benefactor if he goes through with the murder. Dexter may be a homicidal psychopath, but he has a code around his serial killing profession. The most important rule is that he only kills people who deserve it, which usually tends to be criminals, other serial killers, and general bad guys.

Still, it isn’t uncommon for him to overlook this rule in pursuit of his own self-preservation. Since Batista now knows his secret, he poses a direct threat to Dexter. Therefore, killing him would be a logical conclusion rather than a frivolous indulgence. Even so, the killer decides to free the ex-cop in hopes of potentially teaming up with him. Nonetheless, it seems the other man doesn’t share in this same optimistic potential for collaboration. Thus, once Batista is free, he immediately attacks Dexter. As a result, he ends up getting shot by Prater, who locks up his dead body in a vault with the serial killer. Later, once Dexter has broken out and resolved his matters, the cops find Batista’s dead body. In the end, Prater, who is dead but presumed to be missing by the authorities, is pinned down for the murder.

David Zayas Makes an Appearance in Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection

David Zayas has been a vital part of ‘Dexter’ since the show first aired all the way back in 2006. Since then, he has been part of almost every spin-off series, except for the prequel series, in which another actor takes on the role of Angel Batista. Thus, since Zayas is something of a staple in the franchise, his absence in season 2 of ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ would have been a bitter affair for the fans. Fortunately enough, the actor makes a return to the series, reprising his role, albeit in a slightly different capacity than before. Angel Batista’s death in the season 1 finale is tragically final for the character.

However, in the sophomore season of the series, the memory of the ex-police officer returns to Dexter in the form of one of his various hallucinations. The serial killer famously hallucinates dead people in his head all the time, with his adoptive father, Harry, as the most common example. Thus, it seems, in the aftermath of his death, Batista has also inherited this role in Dexter’s life. Episode 1 of Season 2 begins with the protagonist dreaming about hunting the New York Ripper with Batista by his side. Eventually, the dream turns into a nightmare as the latter ends up on his kill table, accusing Dexter of ending his life.

Therefore, even though the beloved character’s role in season 2 is significantly reduced, he continues to have an important impact on the protagonist. It seems Batista’s death has set off something crucial in Dexter, triggering a mid-life crisis wherein he’s eager to have his efforts recognized and validated by others. Zayas only appears in the second season as a special guest. Thus, his presence can be expected to be scarce. Yet, it’s possible that he may return to the character once again down the line, likely confined to only Dexter’s mind.
