12 Best Emo Anime Girls of All Time

The word ”emo” means emotional. The shortened version of the word gives it a much edgier feel. Though at first the term was used to describe a style of rock music, similar to punk, recently, it has been used in a broader context. It applies to those who are quite emotional, often being quite extreme at it, or those who suppress their emotions a lot. It also applies to characters who have a darker attitude. This type of character is quite popular in anime. So, why not take a look at some of the popular emo anime girls? Here’s the list of top emo anime girls of all time. You can watch many of these anime on Crunchyroll, Netflix or Hulu.

12. Revy – Black Lagoon (2006)

‘Black Lagoon’ is an entertaining piece of anime. One of the main reasons for that is the wonderful array of characters. Rebecca, aka, Revy, is the ultimate badass and cold-hearted female anime characters. She is a formidable killer and does not hesitate to kill anyone even if they happen to be an unarmed civilian. She is one of the main characters of the action anime ‘Black Lagoon’. Revy, a Chinese-American who was brought up in Manhattan, is a member of the Lagoon company and does most of the killings for them. She gets agitated quite easily and is quick to adopt violent measures rather than diplomatic solutions. She is very good at shooting. It seems that she has been a thief and a murderer for a long time. Her hair is of a burgundy color and she keeps it in bangs. She wears military boots without socks. Revy also wears a black crop top and very short torn-off jeans which reveals her belly.

11. Lust – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2003 – 2004)

Lust is one of the antagonists of the sci-fi-action anime series, ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood‘ She was also the first homunculus that we as viewers get to see. She has a very important role in shaping up the plot as she is present in most of the major events and happenings of the series. We see her trying to manipulate various people just to fulfill her and her group’s goals. Her nickname is Ultimate Spear. She is quite intelligent and we often see her having much more flexible authority over her missions than other homunculus. Lust does not like humans and hates them a lot. She deems them to be stupid and does not hesitate to manipulate them for her own benefit before disposing of them. Glutton, another homunculus who loves to eat anything and everything, is often partnered with her. Lust also refers to homunculi as the super-humans and declares that they are evolved versions of human beings. Even then, being able to become a true human is an important ambition for her.

10. Izumi Takanashi – Working!! (2016)

Izumi Takanashi is a sad kind of emo girl. There are a couple of them on this list. She is one of the supporting characters from the comedy-romance anime, ‘Working!!’. The series follows Souta Takanashi whose love for small, cute things leads him to work at Wagnaria, a family restaurant in Hokkaido, since he is not able to refuse the cute Popura Taneshima. Izumi is the second sister of Souta’s family. She looks kind of sick (by sick I mean literally sick and not cool) because she stays in her room all day. She aspires to become a writer and spends most of the time trying to write. Since she does not like technology, she uses fountain pens, which is why we can see her clothes covered in ink. She often suffers from writer’s block. Physically, she is quite weak and has to rely on others to care for her. She is a romance writer but the sad fact is that there is no romance in her own life.

9. Clare – Claymore (2007)

Clare is the protagonist from the action-adventure anime series ‘Claymore’. The series revolves around shapeshifting monster by the name of Youma taking on human form and attacking humans. They kill humans and eat their flesh. To save humanity from these monsters, the Claymore, who are human-youma hybrids having the sole purpose of terminating these vicious monsters, arrive. Clare is a claymore. She arrives at Raki’s, the male protagonist, village when a Youma is found to be present there. She kills the Youma but is unable to save his parents. Raki is banished from his home, so Clare decides to make him her partner. Along with him, she goes from village to village cleansing them of Youma all the while learning more about her own organization as well as getting close to the Youma against whom she seeks vengeance. Clare has blonde hair, which is chin-length. The girl wears armor and carries a sword.

8. Mei Misaki – Another (2012)

Mei Misaki is the female protagonist from the mystery-horror anime series, ‘Another’. The series has high depiction of violence, so if you do not like such stuff or violence easily affects you, then you should not watch it. She is quite beautiful and has short, chin-length, black hair and ghostly complexion. One of her eyes is red and the other is mostly covered by an eyepatch. Later, we come to know the reason for that but we’re trying to avoid adding spoilers as much as possible. Her entire class behaves as if she does not exist, which makes Kouichi Sakakibara, the male protagonist of the anime, quite curious. Despite having being given enough warnings, he still decides to converse with her. Misaki’s grandmother has a doll shop which features a conjoined doll. Mei is quite fascinated by this piece. The best part about her character is that even though she is quite mysterious and gloomy in the beginning, we see a gradual change in her by the end of the series.

7. Rukia Kuchiki – Bleach (2006 – 2010)

Rukia Kuchiki is one of the main characters of the popular action anime ‘Bleach’. ‘Bleach’ is a really entertaining anime and is one of the very first anime to make soul reapers or the shinigami look badass. I really enjoyed the series, but none of that would be possible without Rukia Kuchiki, the girl who started it all. Ichigo would not have become a soul reaper and we would not have got such an awesome anime series if Rukia was not there. But even though she is one of the frequently appearing characters we see her revealing very less about her emotional side. Even when she is on the verge of being sentenced to death, she looks calm. Later, we find out how she actually became a member of the Kuchiki clan. But even after being part of a noble family, she chooses to talk to commoners and retains her modesty. But her cool demeanor often makes her hide her troubles from those who are close to her. It is often quite late when the main characters get to know about her trouble what she is going through.

6. Saeko Bushijima – Highschool of The Dead (2010)

Saeko Bushijima is one of the main characters of the zombie-apocalypse anime series, ‘Highschool of The Dead’. She is one of my favorite characters of the series. She is super sexy and badass. Saeko is the reason why the main characters are alive since she is the one who does the most fighting when the entire group is in a grave situation. But even after being such an important character, she seldom reveals how she feels. She never really talks about herself or what she is going through. But towards the end, we see her opening up for the first time and reveal what she actually feels to Takashi Kimuro, the male protagonist of the series. Saeko is a master of the kendo style and her use of the sword, be it wooden, is marvelous. She has a cool demeanor which is quite attractive. Her sexy and curvaceous figure helps too. Believe me, you might end up watching the whole series just by craving more of her!

Rei Ayanami is one of the main female characters from the popular action anime series, ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’. She is one of the First Children and is the pilot of Evangelion Unit-00. She is quite enigmatic and this personality of hers confuses not just the viewers but also the people around her. Her lack of a concrete origin story also adds to her mystery. But slowly as the series progresses, we see a gradual change in her as she starts interacting more frequently with other people and develops a special bond with Shinji Ikari, the protagonist of the anime, her copilot and classmate. But even then, she rarely shows any emotions for the most part of the series, except at certain times when she is with Shinji. Rei is good at what she does and her mysterious appearance along with her suppressing her emotions puts her on this list. She is quite attractive too and has a curvy figure which can be seen when she is in her plugsuit.

4. Nana Osaki – Nana (2006 – 2007)

Nana Osaki is one of the main characters of the series slice of life, music, comedy anime series ‘Nana’. She is the boldest and coolest of the two Nana. She is a rock singer and used to roll with a band as their lead singer. But she decides to pursue her goal of becoming a famous singer and moves to Tokyo, and on her way, she meets Nana Komatsu. Her appearance is that of a punk rocker. But even though her appearance might lead you to believe otherwise, she is a very devoted friend and it is her’s and Nana’s friendship that the show is all about. Nana is the illegitimate daughter of her mother and is brought up by her grandmother who was very strict. She has had a tough life. In school, she was expelled after being falsely accused of prostitution. But even then, Nana tries to be brave and seldom shows much emotion. She really loves Hachi (nickname of Nana Komatsu) and wants to help her in any way possible.

3. Lucy – Elfen Lied (2004)

Lucy is the protagonist of the anime ‘Elfen Lied’. She is a Diclonius, which is a special breed of humans having horns on their heads and invisible telekinetic hands, which can be used as destructive weapons. Ever since she was a child, Lucy has had to face a lot of teasing and name-calling. Children made fun of her horns and called her freak. When she was a bit old, she was subjected to inhumane experiments by the government. This makes her quite violent and she develops a deep hatred for everything human. She is on this list because she showcases extreme emotions or none at all. Though the show at times make you feel for Lucy, it never tries to hide the fact that this 18-year-old is a vicious killer.

2. Touka Kirishima – Tokyo Ghoul (2018)

Touka Kirishima is one of the main characters from the horror-action anime series, ‘Tokyo Ghoul’. The codename that the ghoul investigators have for her is the rabbit. She, at first, is shown to be quite cold, not displaying a lot of emotions. But over the course of the first season, she gets quite comfortable having Kaneki around. But after he leaves Anteiku, she becomes a quiet emo and becomes very less active than her previous self. Though she does not show this, Touka is actually quite lonely and feels bad that Kaneki left her and her family at Anteiku.

1. Mikasa Ackerman – Attack on Titan (2013 – Present)

Mikasa Ackerman is my favorite character from the ‘Attack on Titan’ anime series. Hell, she is one of my most favorite female anime characters of all time. She is beautiful, sexy, smart, and pretty badass. I mean, who wouldn’t want their partner protecting them like Mikasa protects Eren? But even though she feels deeply for him, she seldom shows it. She devotes so much of her mental, emotional, and physical energy thinking about keeping Eren safe that she does not really share her own feelings or troubles, and keeps them hidden, though at times they do surface. Mikasa has a really cool aura about herself, and you’d fall for those passionate eyes and seemingly cold face.
