‘Too Hot to Handle’ has quite a similar application process to that of other reality programs. Since its principal objective is entertainment, the casting directors usually look for individuals who would either get along very well or be complete opposites and cause serious tension. Considering the idea of this particular production, though, specific attributes and practices like sexual activeness with commitment phobia, along with talent, would place applicants at the top of the list. Yes, you have to be incredibly hot, but you should also have something more and natural to offer.
When the casting call opens up, Netflix usually only provides brief details about what they’re looking for and why. They do not reveal everything for the sake of keeping their new and creative concepts a secret until they’re ready for the players and the viewers to know. For example, for season 2, producers made up a fake series called “Parties in Paradise” to entice the participants. Cam Holmes remarked, “We were told it would be a partying show with loads of single people in there having sex, having the time of our lives.” Thus, it was a real shock when they found out the truth.
As for the actual process, season 1’s Harry Jowsey revealed a few secrets while giving an interview on the ‘Is It Just Me?’ podcast. Deeming it to be demanding and time-consuming, he stated, “There was a massive flow of questions, mostly focused on our love life and our sex life,” following their audition application and tapes “to see if we were the right kind of people.” Plus, although they leaned more towards those singles who already had a relatively strong social media presence, they didn’t even reveal that it was a Netflix show until the contestants had already reached the island.
In simple words, it appears as if the creators of this fascinating show only want individuals who would be open to anything and not be afraid of a bit of competition. However, as seasons 2 and 3 were both filmed back to back on Turks and Caicos Island in the Caribbean, it seems like we’d all have to wait for Netflix to announce another installment with a few details before new applications would even be accepted. Or, like before, hopefuls would just have to keep their eye open on the platform’s reality roster casting and apply to land a spot on ‘Too Hot to Handle’ unwittingly.
