The German comedy film ‘My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me’ revolves around a pair of best friends whose bond comes under fire in light of a budding romance. Olli has known Matze since he was eight years old. The duo has been inseparable their entire lives, working at the same real estate agency and even living together in the same apartment. However, with the entrance of Becky, Matze’s new girlfriend, Olli begins to feel significantly sidelined in his best friend’s life. As a result, the latter quickly develops a sense of hostility towards Becky, convinced that she’s taking over his best friend’s life and changing everything for the worse. Therefore, when this new relationship threatens to come in the middle of the year-long world tour trip Matze and Olli have planned, the stakes instantly rise, leading to an all-out war between the best friends and the girlfriend. My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me Plot Synopsis
Olli and Matze first met in elementary school when the former extended a hand of friendship to the latter, a new kid in class, who struggled with stuttering. Years later, they have remained joined at the hip. After making plans to travel the globe together in a year-long trip, the duo is finally close to making their dreams a reality in a matter of weeks. While their friendship with each other remains stronger than ever, one of their other friends, Schmitti, has slowly but surely started to phase out of their lives ever since he got married. The reason for it becomes evident when the two attend the latter’s birthday party and his house and bring their unique brand of chaos into his and Antje’s home.
From arriving late to inadvertently setting off the security alarms and bringing a marijuana plant as an inappropriate gift, they unrepentantly prove Antje’s unfavorable opinion of them right. The next day, Matze finds himself showing an apartment unit to a charming and attractive client, Becky, a dentist who is trying to move out of her old place because of her roommate’s overbearing new boyfriend. The fateful meeting sends sparks flying between the two and ultimately leads to a dinner date. When Matze first introduces her to Olli, the latter assumes the relationship will be a fling on account of their upcoming travel plans. However, he quickly realizes that Becky might not be going anywhere anytime soon.
Shortly afterward, the dentist becomes an unfortunate constant presence in his life as her and Matze’s relationship continues to progress swimmingly. When his best friend begins prioritizing his time with her and indulging her hobbies over his time with Olli, the latter grows antsy about his rapidly diminishing significance in his best friend’s life. Things hit a tipping point when Becky hosts a work party at the duo’s apartment, in which she expects things to remain mature and sophisticated. Nonetheless, she ends up ticking Olli off, which leads him to sabotage the party with his juvenile antics, thus ruining the dentist’s reputation in front of her boss. Although this initially causes a heated argument between the couple, they somehow end up talking about moving in together instead.
When Olli learns about the development, he tries to convince his best friend that if he takes this next step, his life would become identical to Schmitti’s, with a controlling partner inhibiting his freedom. Consequently, Matze asks his girlfriend to let him prioritize his upcoming world tour before the next stage in their relationship. Following a conversation with her friend Moni, Becky begins to realize that she may lose her boyfriend if she continues to let his best friend influence his life. As such, Becky plays up the role of a supportive girlfriend while simultaneously coming up with an excuse to crash at Matze’s place for a few days. This new forced proximity between her and Olli continues to exacerbate their petty rivalry.
Their prank war ends when it causes a small fire in the apartment. In the aftermath, Becky convinces Matze that the fire is a sign that they should move out of the apartment and into a new one together. She even manages to get them a meeting to finalize a unit’s acquisition. However, the night before the meeting, Olli takes Matze on a night out on the town, which ultimately ends with the duo passed out drunk on the beach. Once Becky realizes Matze had missed the meeting, she decides to give up on the relationship and dumps him. Yet, afterward, instead of consoling his best friend through his heartbreak, Olli tries to revel in the fact that the world tour trip is back on track. Nevertheless, his lack of care only drives a wedge between the two best friends, compelling the other to pull out of their plans entirely.
My Best Friend, His Girlfriend, and Me Ending: What Happens to Olli and Matze’s World Tour Trip?
Olli and Matze have been planning their world tour for a long time. They both have plans to quit their jobs and take off with a backpack for an entire year, visiting every continent and collecting new experiences. However, a few weeks before this pipe dream is about to become a reality, a big hurdle is thrown in their path. Matze meets Becky and begins to fall for her fast and hard. Their relationship brings a kind of reliable stability in his life that he has always craved. As a result, it soon becomes evident that he would have to choose between this new promising relationship and his pre-existing plans with his best friend. Olli knows that if his friend gets serious enough about his new girlfriend, he wouldn’t be willing to take off for an entire year.
Similarly, Becky fears losing the best relationship of his life to a trip. Consequently, the two develop a competitive dynamic off the bat. Ultimately, Oli ends up winning their competition by pulling off an elaborate scheme. First, he makes Matze believe he understands his reservations against undertaking the trip in light of his new relationship. This gives him the high ground he needs to convince the other man to have one final night out with him as a way to commemorate the trip that never was. He intentionally times this hangout on the night before his best friend’s big meeting with the apartment owner to ensure that their drunken shenanigans prevent Matze from showing up at the meeting on time.
In light of these events, Becky realizes she can’t keep fighting for a relationship that her partner has no interest in prioritizing. This inevitably brings about the couple’s break-up, which leaves them both heartbroken. Yet, Olli finds himself with a cause for celebration. Mere minutes after learning about their separation, he tries to cheer Matze up with the tickets he had pre-emptively booked to jumpstart their world tour. Nonetheless, all this does is prove to Matze that his best friend has been preying on the downfall of his and Becky’s relationship from the very start. As such, he begins to see the selfish parts of his best friends that are so co-dependent that they refuse to let Matze grow and find his own happiness in life. While Matze was happy to commit to a trip with Olli before, he’s happier to finally have a shot at building a stable life with the woman he loves.
Nonetheless, his friend refuses to look past his own dream and support him in this endeavor. For the same reason, he ends up pulling out of the trip on the heels of a friendship break-up between the two. However, during their separation, Olli begins to see the error of his ways. He realizes that he was pushing his own aspirations on his best friend, who just didn’t want to have the same priorities in life as he did. Therefore, before leaving on his trip, he orchestrates one final scheme to bring Matze and Becky back together again. This grand gesture becomes a symbol of his love and care for his best friend. Thus, Matze is compelled to chase Olli down at the airport and make up with him minutes before the other boards his flight. Even though their plans for a world tour fell through, their friendship survives this new change in their lives.
Do Matze and Becky Get Back Together?
From the get-go, Mantze and Becky remain a good match for one another. They easily fit into each other’s lives, sharing similar worldviews and desires for their future. Moreover, neither is afraid of jumping into a commitment with the other, trusting that their relationship is strong enough to withstand daunting developments like moving in together. Seemingly, the only source of real conflict in their relationship stems from Olli, who is less-than-eager to lose his best friend to the dentist. Likewise, the latter is ready to fight for her relationship with Matze if that’s what it takes to keep him in her life. Even so, her resolve ultimately breaks when she realizes she’s the only one fighting for this relationship.
Matze’s night out with Olli proves to Becky that he would never choose her over his best friend, which compels her to finally throw in the towel. Afterward, her ex-boyfriend continues trying to win her back but consistently fails to change her mind. It isn’t until Olli himself shows up at her dentist’s chair that she finally opens herself up to the idea of taking Matze back. Olli has been blatant about his dislike for her from the very start. Yet, once he witnesses the depth of his friend’s heartbreak, he realizes the gravity of his actions. For the same reason, he’s eager to fix his mistakes, no matter the cost. He even sits through a dental treatment with Becky, sans anesthesia, to prove how serious he is about the matter.
Afterward, Olli pulls some strings to get Becky and Matze in the same place at the same time. He has Schimmit and Moni respectively text the two, inviting them for a meet-up at a restaurant, forcing them into a reunion. Once the pair of exes finally realizes what is happening, they have no choice but to talk to each other and acknowledge the absurdity of their predicament. This meeting unravels Becky’s biggest reservation against being in a relationship with Matze. Previously, she had thought she could never be at the top of his priority list thanks to Olli. However, now the latter has himself given his blessing to be knocked down to number two. Thus, in the end, she decides to take Matze back, and the couple finally moves in together, stepping into the start of their new lives together.
Does Olli End Up With Pia?
Even though Matze eventually realizes that traveling the globe isn’t something he truly wants, the dream never changes for Olli. Unlike his friend, the latter truly hates his job as a real estate agent and has grown tired of his monotonous life. He seeks adventure and a unique kind of thrill. Therefore, even after Matze pulls out of the trip, Olli only tries to sell his friend’s tickets, continuing to hold onto his own. This is how he officially meets Pia, the woman who later buys Matze’s tickets. The two have previously crossed paths at the bookshop where she works. Olli has a habit of perusing the shelves in the establishment and ripping off the necessary pages instead of buying the whole book. Yet, despite getting off on the wrong foot, Pia and Olli manage to get on quite well with each other.
Much like him, the bookstore worker has also been looking for something adventurous and new. As such, she took the availability of the world tour tickets as a sign to finally take the plunge and begin her traveling journey. This means, she and Olli are set up to continue crossing paths with one another, on planes, tourist locations, etc, for the foreseeable future. Naturally, it only makes sense for them to get to know each other better. However, their common acquaintance eventually turns into something more until they basically start spending their trips together. Over time, they fall in love with each other, and Olli makes the impromptu decision to propose to her. This big step signifies a huge point of character development for him and his previous issues with relationship commitments.
