The Spanish disaster film ‘Surviving Hurricane Otis’ charts the story of a pair of brothers who find themselves caught up in a dangerous sea-bound adventure. As a storm brews on the horizon of Acapulco, a young sailor named Wirpul is tasked with the responsibility of looking after a party yacht. In undertaking this job, he recruits the help of his half-brother, Candido, despite never seeing eye to eye with him. However, the petty bad blood between the two brothers quickly takes a back seat once the looming storm turns into something far more dangerous. Before they know it, the duo end up smack in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane that threatens to ravage the sailors on the sea and the city’s shores alike. Thus, Wirpul and Candi must put their differences aside or resolve them in the eye of the hurricane so they can work together for their mutual survival. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Surviving Hurricane Otis Plot Synopsis
Wirpul is a sailor who works at El Majestuoso II, an esteemed yacht that services tourists off the coast of Acapulco. He’s a stickler for the rules who wants to make an honest name for himself. On the other hand, his half-brother, Candido, works at an auto shop. He’s more interested in making money than maintaining virtue, which he proves by attempting to rob his place of work. The burglary doesn’t work, but he still pockets some money by selling his weapon of choice, his dead father’s gun, to his boss. Unsurprisingly, there’s no love lost between the siblings. Both live with their respective mothers in a property jointly owned by their father. However, Candi’s mother, Carmen, wants to sell the land. This, paired with the brothers’ opposing views on their father, causes much friction between the two households. Even so, when Wirpul gets promoted to Captain and finds himself in need of a new sailor, his mother convinces him to reach out to the other young man.

The next morning, the two meet at the docks, from where they board the yacht. On his part, Candi is fairly worried about Hurricane Otis, which is expected to hit the seas soon. Nonetheless, the captain insists that everything will be alright since forecasts haven’t predicted anything disaster-worthy. Yet, it’s obvious that he’s mostly only interested in impressing the ship’s owner, Nicolas, a wealthy man who is delegating orders from the safety of his luxury hotel suite. Since he had forgotten to pay his Yacht Club dues, the vessel has to be anchored in open water. However, when his father expresses concerns about the severity of the upcoming storm, he lies about the club and instructs Wirpul to do the same. Things between the brothers remain tense on board as they snipe and bicker at each other. One specific point of contention between them stems from the recent death of their father.
Wirpul believes their father was a no-good, deadbeat, which is why he died in the middle of a robbery. Alternatively, the other son insists that their old man only got caught on the wrong side of a mugging. As the evening rolls in, the storm begins to grow more dangerous. Even so, the captain refuses to flee the vessel. When he informs Nicolas of the situation, he convinces him the weather will mellow out and forbids him from abandoning the vessel. By the time he begins to consider that option, Otis has already turned into a Category 5 hurricane. Worse yet, the amateur sailor’s poor knot skills had set the dinghy loose. When Wirpul tries to overpower the anchoring on the ship, he only manages to burn out the engine. As a result, the two brothers find themselves in the thick of it with seemingly no way out.

An attempt to jump off-board results in Candi catching stray debris that almost slices his neck open. For a moment, they consider if riding out the hurricane inside the yacht’s cabin is their best bet. Nonetheless, the older brother convinces the other that doing so would only seal their death certificates. By then, Wirpul also begins to realize that he’s risking his life for a boss who doesn’t care if he lives or dies. Finally, the duo abandon ship and take their chance in the water. Candi nearly drowns under the weight of his injury, but the other manages to save him. Afterward, the two are rescued by another seafarer, who harbors them on her vessel and even fixes the injured sailor up. As their ship enters the eye of the hurricane, she tells the boys their only chance of survival is at the shore. Yet, this time around, when the time comes to take the leap of faith, Candi tricks Wirpul into going alone and stays back on the ship.
Surviving Hurricane Otis Ending: Is Candi Dead? How Did He Survive?
Once Candi sustains serious injuries, his condition slowly begins to deteriorate. The first aid provided by the helpful stranger offers some help, but it’s hardly a permanent fix. The last time he had jumped into the sea with these injuries, he had nearly drowned and had to be rescued by Wirpul. For the same reason, this time around he decides against fleeing the ship at all. He thinks that by going back into the water, he would only become a burden on his brother and likely doom him to a fatal demise as well. Thus, he makes the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that the other makes it out of the storm alive. In the aftermath, Wirpul does wash up on shore, carried by the waves into the hurricane-ravaged town. A kind stranger helps him with his broken leg, which allows him to make the journey into the city in search of his mother.

At that moment, the sailor has no choice but to believe that he is the only survivor of the shipwreck. However, at the medical center, he makes an unexpected discovery. As it turns out, Candi has managed to survive the storm and has even made his way back to the city. When he reunites with his brother, he jokes about how the aliens had rescued him. This is a nod to the long-running gag where Candi has expressed an interest in the extraterrestrial and even claimed to have paranormal experiences a few times. Nevertheless, alien intervention is of course not the truth. Once the last ship went down, the sailor luckily ended up on some debris, which prevented him from drowning even as he lost consciousness. The wooden plank eventually floated away from the sea and brought him to the shore. In the end, Candi survives thanks to a favorable and fortunate twist of fate.
Does Wirpul Make It Back Home?
Even though Candi makes it to the medical center the next morning, he chooses to stay hidden until he finds Wirpul. Although he reveals he’s alive to his brother, he doesn’t want to announce his survival elsewhere just yet. Instead, he hands the other his wallet and his necklace, advising him to use them as paraphernalia for the rescue missions that are about to go out. Essentially, he wants to maintain the illusion that he is still either lost at sea or dead. This is because Candi has come up with a plan to punish the person who is actually responsible for putting him and his brother in the dangerous situation in the first place.

Nicolas’ negligence prevented Majestuoso from being anchored at the Yacht Club, which could’ve spared the sailors the chaos in the open water. Additionally, despite knowing the potential danger of Hurricane Otis, he had selfishly sent Wirpul into the storm. Nicolas himself knows that he’s in a precarious situation. The Majestuoso was already insured, which means that he had risked his employees’ lives without even a proper business justification for it. He had simply valued the yacht more than he valued his captain’s life. This means that if Wirpul decides to take him to court, he stands to lose a lot, both in terms of finances and reputation. For the same reason, Nicolas is incentivized to resolve the tension between them in the aftermath privately.
If Candi is lost or presumed dead at the time that this conversation is taking place, the stakes are naturally heightened. Wirpul has better leverage since his brother’s disappearance is a reflection on Nicolas’ poor management. As such, when the latter offers him financial compensation, which is mutually understood to be hush money, the sailor can negotiate for a better deal. In the end, Wirpul walks away with $180 thousand, plus the fees for his captain’s license. In the aftermath, the brothers can split this money between themselves. Hurricane Otis has likely done some significant damage to their house, which will need repairs. Moreover, Wirpul also buys a boat of his own, so that he no longer has to rely on someone else for a living. Ultimately, this near-death experience has brought the two families together, which means they will likely share in this new financial advantage together.
What Happens to Majestuoso? Why Did Wirpul Not Want to Abandon the Ship?
Even before Wirpul and Candi board Majestuoso, the former’s mother expresses her worry about her son being on the sea with a storm on the horizon. Nonetheless, the son brushes off her concerns, insisting that the potential for progress that this opportunity presents is bigger than the risk. This would be the sailor’s first time as a captain. Therefore, if he proves his skills and reliability right now, he can secure a better future for his career. For Wirpul, a respectable profession and reputation were two of the most important things in life. Part of the reason is that he has internalized the idolization of these virtues because his father possessed neither. His father was married to Carmen when he met Chuyo and began an affair with her. Afterward, once Wirpul was born of this relationship, he brought the two back home to raise his two sons side by side.

However, the father’s inability to be a faithful husband or partner wasn’t his only flaw. He was also a criminal and a petty thief who made money through immoral and illegal jobs. In the end, when he died as a result of a violent crime, it was assumed that his death was connected to some shady job gone wrong. As such, Wirpul hates his father for the poor example he had set for his two sons. He doesn’t want anything to do with the man and wants to set himself apart from him as much as possible. It’s part of the reason why he’s hesitant to embrace Candi as his brother. These familial complications also drive the sailor to develop an unhealthy relationship with his job. However, once he’s pushed into a life-or-death situation, he realizes how exploitative Nicolas truly is, which gives him the push he needs to stop vying for his approval. In the end, as Majestuoso sinks int he storm, the captain chooses his life and jumps aboard.
