That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 2: Premiere Date, Characters, Plot

Sometimes, the title of an anime itself is enough to lure you into watching it and ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’ or Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken is a great example of that. From the name itself, many get the impression that it is going to be something very different from what they have ever seen. And it kind of turns out to be true because the first few episodes are surprisingly refreshed versions of the shounen fantasy genre. But sadly, after the initial few episodes, the anime turns into your typical harem bait. The problem with anime shows like these is that initially, they display so much potential that you actually start believing something about it will change despite its generic nature. You end up watching the entire season but in the end, you are nothing but disappointed.

The anime starts off really well and had my attention from the first episode itself. The main protagonist of the anime, who is a 37-year-old virgin, dies with the last wish where he wants to be reborn as an OP who can have sex with as many girls as he wants and that’s how the rest of the story follows. Now to be fair, wouldn’t that be the last wish of every guy out there, especially of those who are Shounen’s targeted demographic? From the title itself, once the main protagonist dies, you know he’ll be coming back as slime. Though I love the idea of portraying the adventures of a slime, I didn’t really like the way things unfolded. In fact, it reached a point where it felt like the title of the anime was just a marketing strategy to draw people towards it.

Comedy can be really subjective depending on where you’re from and what you’re into. And of course, something that may be funny for the Japanese audience may not exactly be appealing to the audience in the west. But even then, one can always differentiate between what might be potentially funny and what looks like a forced attempt to come off hilarious. The dialogues and even the situational jokes of the anime are repetitive. Though they are extremely funny the first time around, their recurrence clearly portrays a lack of creativity on the creators part. And because of these bland jokes and dialogues, most characters just seem to be very mediocre. I’m not saying that it is not funny at all but I just feel that a lot more could have been done especially when it comes to the situational humor side of the anime.

At the end of the day, ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime‘ is just another typical Isekai anime and if that’s your thing, then great, go ahead and give it a shot. But then again, if you are into Isekai, you probably have seen something very similar to this in other anime shows of the same genre. I understand that the shows of this genre are actually supposed to be ridiculous but if this lameness that they portray is not fun to watch, then what’s the whole point of it?

Now my opinion about the anime is clearly not at all positive but then that’s just what I think about it and it does not necessarily mean that everyone has to agree with it. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Plot:

Unlike most 37-year-olds who start hating their monotonous corporate lives, Saturo Mikami is very proud of it and lives a relaxed life. His only concern is that he has never been able to have sex with a girl and he’s about to be a 40-year-old-virgin, which he finds kind of embarrassing. One day on the street, while he’s strolling with one of his friends, a mugger attacks them and amid this chaotic situation, Saturo gets stabbed. As he slowly drifts into the darkness, a bunch of words starts to echo in the back of his head. The dying man slowly sees the light and drifts towards it while those words in his head make no sense at all.

When he regains consciousness, he realizes that he has been transported into a completely different realm where he’s nothing but a goop of slime. But as slime, he possesses the power of devouring anything and retaining its appearance and abilities. He then runs into a huge monster known as the “Storm Dragon” Verudora, who has been sealed away and is kept in captivity for completely destroying a town 300 years ago. Saturo feels bad for the monster and befriends him. He even promises that he will find a way to break its seal and that’s when the Dragon gives him the name Rimuru Tempest, in order to provide him divine protection. Now with a new set of goals in life, Saturo sets out on a journey to prove it to himself that he’s a lot more than a boring corporate worker. Leaving his old life behind, he soon gets accustomed to his new body and makes an impact on the world around him through his gooey endeavors.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Characters:

Rimuru Tempest

Rimuru is the only main character of the anime, who was once a 37-year-old Japanese salaryman who dies and later gets reincarnated as a slime in a completely different realm. Rimuru initially appears as a blue colored slime but later, after getting transformed into demon slime, he gets shiny golden streaks on its slimy body. As a slime, its body lacks gender and that’s the reason why every time it tries to embody someone else, it takes the form of an androgynous version of them. With time, its mass grows, which allows it to make bigger mimicry forms without using magic to compensate for the extra mass. In its initial slime state, it only has enough mass to mimic a human child but by the time it reaches its “ultimate state of slime”, it is able to mimic a full-fledged 16-year-old.

He has a kind heart and often avoids situations where he thinks he might attract any form of trouble. As a human in his past life, he was also really hardworking and extremely committed towards his job. He even showed signs of low self-esteem and would often beg for the acceptance of others. After turning into a Demon Lord as a slime, he slowly learns to adapt to his new lifestyle and uses his knowledge from games and manga to find ways to destroy his enemies. But as soon as he’s done with his responsibilities, he goes back to being all laid back and relaxed about everything.
