‘Evil Dead Burn,’ the sixth installment in the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise, revolves around a family’s struggle for survival from forces of great supernatural evil. After Alice’s husband dies, she’s left to deal with the aftermath in the company of her in-laws. However, little does she know the Price family has a peculiar history with the occult. As a result, soon after the tragedy, an evil omen befalls the fate of the family, slowly infecting each member with its demonic possession. Soon enough, the patriarch Joseph turns into a deadite, who seems to be after a secret artifact that has an unexpected connection to the Prices. Thus, trapped in a house, as new enemies continue to pile up, Alice and Joseph are forced into a fight for their lives, which promises to end in a bloodbath. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Evil Dead Burn Plot Synopsis
Joseph Price scavenges for literary inspiration among his grandfather’s belongings. The latter used to be a member of the Circle of the Wise Men, an old secret society that examined and explored the world of evil spirits. However, in doing so, he ends up unraveling a spell that alerts the deadites to the Kandarian dagger, an old weapon that Benjamin Price coveted as a source of self-defense. Around the same time, two friends, Jared and Leo, come across Jessica’s deadite at a fishing lake, where they meet their demises in an ugly confrontation. Afterward, the demonic woman abandons her old haunt and forays into the woods and the roadway beyond. Meanwhile, after a tense birthday celebration for his younger brother, Will picks a fight with his wife, Alice, and storms out of the venue.
As he angrily drives back home, Will’s car ends up colliding with Jessica’s. As the ensuing crash condemns the driver to a slow death, the deadite turns a spell on him, sentencing him to the same demonic fate as her. In the wake of the accident, Will’s family mourns the death as they gather for his funeral and cremation services. The grieving mother, Susan, seems to have some hostile feelings towards her son’s widow, who remains distant from the family as she reels from the shock of losing her husband. The fact that a scathing argument between them preceded his death certainly doesn’t help matters. After the service, Will’s father, Edgar, manages to get into the backroom to say one final goodbye to his son before his body is cremated.
However, during this encounter, Edgar hears banging from inside the coffin, which compels him to try to free his son. Instead, he only ends up unleashing Will’s deadite, who leaves a burn on his father’s arm. In the aftermath, the Price family, oblivious to what unraveled at the crematorium, returns home. Things heat up over the dinner table when Alice voices her reluctance to take over Will’s business, preferring to return home to Paris for a while. This raises accusations of her commitment to the marriage. Nonetheless, all of it comes to a halt when Edgar, who has been on edge this entire time, turns violent and kills his dog, Max, with a fork. Taken aback by the turn of events, Joseph and his girlfriend, Thya, attempt to take the patriarch to a hospital. Yet, Edgar causes a car crash and brutally kills his son’s partner. By the time Joseph returns home, Alice has already been attacked by a deadite-possessed Max.
Shortly afterward, Thya’s possessed form returns home, terrorizing the family, but eventually finds herself locked up in the house’s basement. Outside, Edgar and Max wait to stand guard, preventing the family from leaving. Eventually, Polly, the grandmother who has dementia, lets Thya out of the basement and finds herself infected as well. On the other hand, Edgar reveals that the deadites are after some coveted item that the Price family is holding on to. This compels Alice, who had briefly perused Benjamin’s research, to ask Joseph about the Kandarian dagger. Soon enough, Susan also loses her humanity after Polly manipulates her into believing that surrendering to the deadites would reunite the whole family. Together, the parents turn Joseph, who ultimately goes after Alice, who flees to the attic to search for the dagger among Benjamin’s belongings.
Evil Dead Burn Ending: Does Alice Survive? Does She Become a Deadite?
After Alice manages to escape to the attic, her chances of survival become significantly higher. The attic houses boxes of Benjamin Price’s belongings, among which there is a dagger that can be used to kill deadites, sending them back to hell and freeing their human vessels of possession. Despite the catch that the dagger is lost in a box of other blades, Alice luckily manages to find the right one after a few failed tries. Therefore, she is able to stab Jospeh, freeing him from the deadite momentarily before the stab wound and his other injuries kill him anyway. Afterward, Joseph and Susan come after the young woman. With the help of the dagger and her own rotary saw, Alice manages to kill the duo, leaving the house in flames to ensure nothing evil can escape.
However, another nightmare is awaiting her on the other side: the deadite of her ex-husband, Will. The altercation that unravels between these two is more heated than any other, given their history. Initially, the widow tries to find help at a nearby construction site, only to find the location abandoned. Once Will arrives, he overpowers her and throws her into a pit, which he begins filling with boiling tar. With her leg impaled on the spot, Alice finds herself pinned to the spot. Yet, she refuses to cave and continues fighting for her life. Eventually, she manages to gain the upper hand by procuring a jackhammer and using it for attack. Once he’s caught up in the tar as well, she fatally stabs him with the dagger. Thus, the woman finally manages to emerge from the harrowing situation alive.
In the aftermath, Alice drags herself out of the pit and crawls her way out of the construction site and toward the roadways. There, she is discovered by the paramedics who come to her rescue. Although she has been left beaten up and wounded by the torturous experience, Alice has managed to emerge with her life on the other side. Yet, as we last leave the character, her distressed state raises a few questions. Throughout the film, changing eyes has consistently been a mark of possession. However, given her bloodied state, it’s difficult to decipher if one of her eyes is bloodshot or showcasing signs of demonic possession. As such, the story resolves Alice’s narrative on an open end, leaving the possibility for a deadite version of the character to return.
Why Are the Deadites After Joe’s Family?
From the get-go, the deadites seem to zero in on Alice’s family. Although they aren’t opposed to taking other victims along the way, they also remain focused on the family, seemingly on the hunt after something that they believe the Prices possess. This can be traced all the way back to Benjamin Price, Joseph’s grandfather. The latter was an investigator and scholar of the spiritual and demonic world. As a part of the Circle of the Wise Men, he had searched for weapons of destruction against Deadites, fearing that he wouldn’t be able to keep his family safe from them. In doing so, he ended up abandoning his family to chase after the fabled Kandarian Dagger.
In the end, Benjamin’s efforts paid off. Even though his family, especially his daughter, Susan, grew to hate him, he discovered the dagger, one of the only mortally dangerous weapons against deadites. In the aftermath of his death, this dagger was added to his collection of research materials, which his family left abandoned. That is, until Joseph dug it out again, hoping to amass inspiration for his writing endeavors. While exploring his journals, he came across an incantation and inadvertently erased the spell that his grandfather had put upon the dagger. As a result, the deadites are alerted to the weapon’s existence. Thus, the Price family became a top-priority target for the demonic beings who are eager to take back the Kandarian Dagger, ensuring that no one can defeat them.
Who is Ellie? Do the Deadites Survive?
After the story’s conclusion, a few end-credit scenes appear to clear up the fates of certain characters while also setting up the franchise’s future. As it turns out, despite her survival, Alice hasn’t quite managed to kill every single deadite who had been on her trail. She stabs Joseph, Will, and Max, the dog, with the dagger, sending the demonic presence possessing them to hell. On the other hand, Susan falls victim to a messy death by rotary saw, and Edgar burns along with the house. However, before the flames engulf the house, Grandma Polly manages to make her escape, albeit without her legs, which had to be sawed off. Thus, the end finds Polly crawling along the road, without her legs, where she inevitably catches the attention of an unwitting passerby.
Consequently, Polly gleefully transfers the deadite possession from her defective body onto her latest victim. Yet, this isn’t the only avenue through which the demonic entities remain in the story. On the other side of the town, at the crematorium where Will’s funeral was held, the owner’s daughter comes across the urns housing ashes that have remained unclaimed by the deceased’s family. One of these urns is dedicated to Christopher Leroy, whose identity remains an undisclosed secret. Another urn belongs to Ellie Bixler, whom fans of the franchise will recognize from ‘Evil Dead Rise.’ As the child speaks the latter’s name, her deadite manifests into the realm of the living and takes her first victim. Thus, regardless of Alice’s brief victory, it seems something menacing is still brewing on the horizon.
Was Will Abusive?
Over the course of the story, it’s hinted several times that something darker was going on in Will and Alice’s marriage. The duo is introduced during Joseph’s birthday party, when the husband gets irritated at his wife for giving his brother a thoughtful and personal gift. He’s envious of the apparent closeness between the two. From the looks of it, it seems like his jealous streak has been a problem between the two for some time. This escalates into a massive argument where Will accuses Alice of turning him into a paranoid, envious partner, claiming that none of his other partners brought out this side of him. Eventually, this results in him drunkenly driving off after his wife refuses to leave with him. In the aftermath, after his death, Alice continues to struggle with her feelings over the loss.
While everyone, especially Will’s family, wants Alice to be the ideal grieving widow, she can’t help but hold onto some complicated feelings over the matter. She takes off her wedding ring soon after the tragedy and wants to return to Paris rather than continue carrying her husband’s legacy in the States. Eventually, she confronts the topic of her relationship with Will head-on in an altercation with deadite Susan. She accuses the mother and her family of turning a blind eye to Will’s pitfalls and faults, all but confirming the abusive nature of their relationship. Afterward, when deadite Will comes after her, she’s faced with a similar struggle. Her dead husband accuses her of seeking pain as a way of punishing herself, claiming that that’s the real reason she stayed with him despite his abuse. Thus, in the end, his death becomes a symbol of Alice’s ultimate freedom from a harrowing night and also an abusive relationship.
