‘To the Max’ is a Spanish adventure movie that finds a tangible basis in real life. The story revolves around a group of extreme sports athletes with a shared interest in BASE jumping and wingsuit flying. The former involves jumping off a fixed structure, usually a mountain or a high-rise building, with a parachute, while the latter is a form of skydiving where divers wear webbing-sleeved jumpsuits to fly through the freefall.
In the film, a climber/BASE jumper named Manolo Chana is introduced as the heart of the group, who introduces his friends, Carlos, Armando, Dario, and Alvaro, to the thrill of wingsuit flying. Afterward, when the group contemplates undertaking a daunting new endeavor at Pakistan’s Mount Nameless, Manolo becomes the glue that holds the team together. However, he unfortunately passed away before the trip came to fruition. Outside of the screen, the real-life Manolo Chana faced a similar demise.
Manolo Chana Died in a Parachuting Accident
Manuel “Manolo” Chana and his friends, Carlos Suárez, Darío Barrio, Álvaro Bultó, and Armando del Rey, first came together sometime after the mid-1990s. The group shared a passion for thrilling adventures and extreme sports, including skydiving. As a result, they became involved with the sport of BASE jumping around the same time, exploring the horizons of the relatively new activity together. In fact, in many ways, the group became pioneers of the sport in Spain. However, the group began to face a series of fatalistic challenges, starting in 2010. On March 14, 2010, Chana performed a jump from an aircraft at the Lillo airfield in Toledo, Spain. Unfortunately, the parachute failed to deploy on time, resulting in the death of the jumper.
Not much else is known publicly about the incident. Chana, though known for his BASE jumping, led a relatively private life otherwise. In his death, he is survived by his family and his loved ones, as well as the numerous individuals whom he inspired with his breathtaking feats. In the aftermath of his death, a string of further misfortune fell upon his other BASE jumper friends. A short few years after Chana’s passing, Alvaro met a similar demise in 2013 when he died in a crash caused by a skydiving accident. A year later, in 2014, Barrio also passed away while performing a jump. Lastly, in 2025, Suárez also faced a fatal accident while filming a stunt for the film ‘To the Max,’ which strived to honor and commemorate the friends he had lost over the years, including Chana.
