NBC Orders ‘Bluff City Law’ and ‘Sunnyside’ to Series

Ahead of its annual upfront presentation on May 13, NBC adds two more titles to its 2019-20 roster. The Network’s prime-time schedule will feature the Jimmy Smits legal drama ‘Bluff City Law,’ and the Kal Penn comedy ‘Sunnyside.’
‘Bluff City Law’ follows a group of lawyers working for a Memphis law firm. They are experts in the civil rights cases with a controversial nature.

The team is led by veteran lawyer Elijah Strait, played by Smits, and his protegee and daughter Sydney Keller, played by Caitlin McGee. The father-daughter relationship between them is in rough waters. Sydney, who stopped talking to his father years ago, returns to the firm and the family after the sudden death of her mother. Elijah’s hope to reconnect with his estranged daughter sprouts again. But Sydney has her own inhibitions, reports Variety.

The series brings back Smits to NBC and the legal dramas. He played key roles in three NBC series ‘L.A. Law,’ ‘Outlaw’ and ‘The West Wing,’ earlier. Co-created by Dean Georgaris and Michael Aguilar and written by Georgaris, ‘Bluff City Law’ is executive produced by Georgaris, Michael Aguliar and David Janollari. The cast includes Jimmy Smits, Caitlin McGee, Scott Shepherd, Barry Sloane, Michael Luwoye, MaameYaa Boafo, Stony Blyden, and Jayne Atkinson. ‘Bluff City Law’ is produced by Universal Television in association with David Janollari Entertainment.

According to Deadline, Kal Penn’s ‘Sunnyside’ features the actor as Garrett Modi, a young New York City Councilman. He is so obsessed with the idea of blending politics with glamour. Modi’s targets are the political elite he bumps into in star-studded parties. But the man has lost his charm after an embarrassing incident that spoils his political career. When the unexpected tragedy hits his celebrity life, Modi turns back to have a look at his chaotic path. The tragedy opens his inner eye and he starts working for a group of peoples who wants to become American citizens.

Penn wrote and executive produces the project along with Matt Murray. ‘The Good Place‘ creator and veteran showrunner Michael Schur serves as a supervising executive producer. David Miner and Dan Spilo also executive produce. ‘Sunnyside’ marks Penn’s return to comedies after ‘Designated Survivor.’ The cast includes Kal Penn, Diana Maria Riva, Joel Kim Booster, Kiran Deol, Poppy Liu, Moses Storm and Samba Schutte. ‘Sunnyside’ is produced by Universal Television in association with Fremulon and 3 Arts Entertainment. Schur has recently inked an overall deal with Uni TV. He has ‘The Good Place,’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ ‘Sunnyside,’ and ‘Q-Force’ in hand.

‘Bluff City Law’ and ‘Sunnyside’ join NBC’s impressive program lineup for 2019-20, which includes ‘The Blacklist,’ ‘Chicago Fire,’ ‘Chicago Med,’ ‘Chicago PD,’ ‘Law & Order: SVU,’ ‘New Amsterdam,’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ ‘The Good Place,’ ‘Superstore,’ and ‘Will & Grace.’
